How to Install the 274RLR Loadbreak Replacement Elbow Connector

This guide provides step-by-step instructions for installing the 274RLR Loadbreak Replacement Elbow Connector, converting a livefront termination to deadfront for UD cable. It covers cable preparation, lug installation, elbow assembly, neutral connection, and initial connection to a bushing.

Estimated time: 1h 30m

Tools needed:

Probe Wrench, Hotstick (Live-Line Tool), Wire Brush, Capacitive Voltage Sensing Device, Cable Cutter, Wire Strippers, Crimping Tool

Supplies needed:

274RLR Replacement Elbow Connector Housing, Compression Lug, Probe, Elastimold Lubricant, Hose Clamp, No. 14 AWG (2.5mm) Copper Wire, Grounding Connector

  1. Prepare for Installation and Ensure Safety

DANGER: All apparatus must be de-energized during installation or removal of parts. Inspect the package contents to ensure completeness and check all components for proper fit with the cable and mating products. Verify the probe threads by hand-threading into the compression lug. Gather all required tools and maintain cleanliness throughout the procedure.

  2. Remove Existing Livefront Termination

Remove the rubber cap from the existing terminator. Cut off the connector at the top of the terminator. Disconnect the ground lead from the base of the terminator. Carefully remove the terminator housing from the cable.

  3. Prepare the Cable

Train the cable to be straight and in-line with the bushing centerline. Measure and cut the cable to 10-1/2 inches from the bushing centerline. Remove 1-3/8 inches of cable insulation from the end, ensuring the cut is square and the conductor is not nicked. If the insulation shield measures less than 6-1/2 inches, proceed; otherwise, consult an Elastimold representative.

  4. Install Compression Lug

Wire brush the bare aluminum conductor immediately before installation. Install the compression lug, rotating it to spread the inhibitor. Position the lug so its threaded hole aligns with the bushing bore. Crimp the lug according to the crimp chart, starting at the crimp line mark and rotating 180 degrees for each successive crimp. Carefully wipe any excessive inhibitor from the lug and cable.

  5. Assemble Elbow Connector Housing

Lubricate the cable insulation and the inside of the elbow housing with the supplied Elastimold lubricant; do not substitute. Slide the elbow connector onto the cable using a back-and-forth twisting motion, then wipe off any excess grease. Align the elbow with the compression lug's threaded hole. Thread the probe into the lug by hand, ensuring it turns freely for approximately four turns before becoming snug. Tighten with a probe wrench until the wrench bends.

  6. Connect Concentric Neutral

Insert one end of a No. 14 AWG (2.5mm) copper wire through the grounding eye on the elbow and twist it tight, taking care not to damage the eye. Twist all neutral wires together and connect them to ground using an appropriate connector, ensuring adequate slack for elbow operation. Add the supplied hose clamp as shown in the diagram and tighten it snugly, but do not overtighten.

  7. Connect Elbow to Bushing

Ensure the transformer and elbow are de-energized. Lubricate the receptacle portion of the elbow connector and the mating bushing with the supplied lubricant. Securely fasten a hotstick to the loadbreak connector pulling eye. Place the elbow connector receptacle over the bushing plug, inserting the male contact until slight resistance is felt. Immediately push the elbow home with a fast, firm, straight motion to engage the internal lock on the elbow and bushing interface.

  8. Perform Voltage Test (274RLR Only)

Remove the test point cap with a hotstick, peeling it off at an angle. WARNING: The voltage test point is a capacitance device; do not use conventional voltage measuring equipment. Use a suitable sensing device designed for capacitive test points to determine if the cable is energized. Treat the elbow as energized until the 'no voltage' indication is confirmed by other means. After testing, clean and lubricate the inside surface of the cap with silicone grease and replace it on the test point.
