Overview

The ABB 375LR-J-5220 is a 200 Amp, 35kV loadbreak elbow connector designed for underground residential distribution (URD) systems. This connector accommodates cable insulation diameters between 0.980 inch and 1.180 inch, making it suitable for #2 AWG compressed stranded or #1 AWG solid conductors (33.62 mm² cross-section). The bi-metal compression lug ensures reliable electrical contact and mechanical strength in medium-voltage applications. This loadbreak elbow connector is rated for 35kV systems and provides a deadfront interface for safe operation in pad-mounted transformers, switchgear, and junction enclosures. The absence of a test point simplifies installation while maintaining compliance with IEEE 386 standards for loadbreak separable connectors. The compression lug design eliminates the need for soldering or crimping, reducing installation time and potential connection errors. Key applications include underground power distribution networks, commercial and industrial facilities, and utility substations where medium-voltage cable terminations are required. The connector’s compact design and compatibility with standard URD cables make it a practical choice for new installations and system upgrades. Always verify cable compatibility and system requirements before installation.

How to Install 375LR/376LR Loadbreak Elbow Connectors

This guide provides step-by-step instructions for the safe installation and wiring of 375LR (without test point) and 376LR (with test point) Loadbreak Elbow Connectors on UD cable.

Estimated time: 1h

Tools needed:

Probe Wrench, Hotstick, Wire brush, Crimp tool, Wire strippers

Supplies needed:

Elbow Connector Housing, Compression Lug, Probe, Lubricant (supplied, do not substitute), No. 14 AWG / 2.5mm copper wire, Appropriate grounding connector

  1. Perform Initial Safety Checks and Component Inspection

DANGER: Ensure all apparatus is de-energized before starting. Inspect all parts for damage, proper rating, and compatibility with mating components. Verify package contents are complete and undamaged. Check the fit of all components with the cable and mating products. Thread the probe into the compression lug to check for resistance; replace damaged components if resistance is encountered. Read all instructions thoroughly and maintain cleanliness.

  2. Prepare and Train Cable for Connection

Train the cable as shown in the diagram to facilitate future operation. Cut excess cable squarely at the center line of the bushing. Unwrap and bind concentric neutral wires 8-1/2 inches back from the cable end. Remove the cable shield and insulation, ensuring not to nick the conductor. Wire brush bare aluminum conductors and immediately install the compression lug, rotating to spread inhibitor. Align the lug's threaded hole with the bushing bore. Crimp the lug per the chart, starting at the crimp line and rotating 180 degrees for successive crimps. Wipe off excess inhibitor. Remove the insulation shield and bevel the insulation end 1/8 inch max. Thoroughly clean the insulation to remove all conductive residue.

  3. Assemble Elbow Housing and Probe

Lubricate the cable insulation and the inside of the elbow housing with the supplied lubricant ONLY; do not substitute. Slide the elbow connector onto the cable using a back-and-forth twisting motion, then wipe off any excess grease. Align the elbow with the compression lug’s threaded hole. Hand-thread the probe into the lug, ensuring it turns freely for approximately four turns before becoming snug. Tighten the probe with the wrench until the wrench bends.

  4. Connect Concentric Neutral Wires

Insert one end of a separate No. 14 AWG / 2.5mm copper wire (or equivalent) through the grounding eye on the elbow and twist it tightly, taking care not to damage the eye. Twist all neutral wires together and connect them to ground using an appropriate connector. Ensure adequate slack is provided in the wires to allow for future elbow operation.

  5. Connect Elbow to Mating Bushing Plug

DANGER: Lubricate the receptacle portion of the elbow connector and the mating bushing ONLY if both the transformer and elbow are confirmed to be DE-ENERGIZED. Operate the connection using a full insulated 'hotstick' type live-line tool; DO NOT OPERATE BY HAND. Consult company safe work practices for required hotstick length.
