What are the voltage ratings for the loadbreak elbow?
The Elastimold 200 amp loadbreak elbow is available for 15 kV and 25 kV series systems.
What material is the housing made from?
The housing is made from 100% peroxide-cured EPDM for lasting durability.
Are the inserts compatible with existing systems?
Yes, they can be universally applied to all IEEE 386 compliant interfaces without costly cable rework or installing additional elbows.
What is the purpose of the PBT interface shield?
It provides an excellent dielectric mating surface, visual voltage indication, confirms full insertion, and prevents rubber-to-rubber sticking.
What do the color codes on the PBT interface shield indicate?
Red indicates 15 kV class, blue indicates 25 kV class, and black indicates 35 kV class.
Can the bushing inserts operate when fully submerged?
Yes, the bushing inserts are designed to ensure exceptional performance even when fully submerged.
Do these products require maintenance?
They feature an improved seal system for maintenance-free operation.
Are capacitive test points available?
Yes, the elbows are available with or without a capacitive test point.
Do the elbows offer an integral jacket seal?
Yes, an integral jacket seal is available for complete sealing.
How is a no-stick interface achieved?
A no-stick interface is achieved when the elbow is used with an Elastimold PBT interface shield.
How to Install Elastimold 375LR/376LR Loadbreak Elbow Connectors
This guide provides step-by-step instructions for installing Elastimold 375LR and 376LR Loadbreak Elbow Connectors, designed for terminating UD cable and connecting to 35kV class loadbreak bushings.
Estimated time: 1h 30m
Tools needed:
Probe Wrench, Crimp Tool, Wire Brush, Hotstick, Suitable Sensing Device (for capacitive test points), Wire Strippers, Utility Knife
Supplies needed:
Elastimold 375LR or 376LR Elbow Connector Kit, UD Cable, No. 14 AWG (2.5mm) Copper Wire, Grounding Connector, HV Insulated Cap(s) or Connector(s), Silicone Grease
- Perform Initial Safety Checks and Component Inspection
DANGER: De-energize all apparatus during installation or removal of parts, except for test point caps and indicators. Inspect all parts for damage, rating, and compatibility with mating parts. Check the package contents to ensure they are complete and undamaged. Verify proper fit of all components with the cable and/or mating products. Test fit the probe into the compression lug by threading it in; if resistance is encountered, check for damage and replace the component. If the product is supplied with protective shipping covers, remove them and replace with appropriate HV insulated caps or connectors before submerging or energizing the circuit.
- Prepare the Cable
Train the UD cable as shown in the documentation to ease operation, ensuring a minimum of 20 inches extends beyond the end of the cable pad mount transformer. Cut any excess cable squarely at the center line of the bushing. Unwrap and bind the concentric neutral wires 8-1/2 inches back from the end of the cable. Remove the shield and insulation from the cable end, cutting squarely and taking care not to nick the conductor. Wire brush the bare aluminum conductors and immediately install the compression lug, rotating it to spread the inhibitor. Position the compression lug so its contact threaded hole aligns with the bushing bore. Crimp the lug according to the crimp chart, starting at the crimp line mark and rotating 180 degrees for each successive crimp. Carefully wipe excessive inhibitor from the outside of the lug and cable. Remove the insulation shield as shown in the documentation and bevel the insulation end a maximum of 1/8 inch. Thoroughly clean the insulation to remove all traces of conductive residue.
- Assemble the Elbow Connector
Lubricate the cable insulation and the inside of the elbow housing with the supplied lubricant; DO NOT SUBSTITUTE. Keep the insulation clean of dirt and grime. Slide the elbow connector onto the cable using a back-and-forth twisting motion. Wipe off all excess grease. Align the elbow with the compression lug’s threaded hole. Hand-thread the probe into the lug, taking care not to cross-thread. The probe must turn freely for approximately four turns before becoming snug. Tighten the probe with a wrench until the wrench bends.
- Connect Concentric Neutral Grounding
Using a separate No. 14 AWG (2.5mm) copper wire or equivalent, insert one end through the grounding eye on the elbow and twist it tightly, taking care not to damage the eye. Twist all neutral wires together and connect them to ground using an appropriate connector. Provide adequate slack in the wires for elbow operation.
- Connect Elbow to Bushing
DANGER: Lubricate the receptacle portion of the elbow connector and the mating bushing ONLY IF THE TRANSFORMER AND ELBOW ARE KNOWN TO BE DE-ENERGIZED. Securely fasten a hotstick to the loadbreak connector pulling eye. If present, remove any insulated cap from the bushing by attaching the hotstick tool to the insulated cap pulling eye and following its instructions. Insert the probe tip approximately 2 inches into the bushing. Immediately push the elbow home with a fast, firm, straight motion, applying sufficient force to engage the internal lock on the elbow connector and bushing interface. DO NOT OPERATE BY HAND.
- Perform Voltage Test (376LR only)
If installing a 376LR connector with a test point, remove the test point cap with a hotstick, peeling it off at an angle rather than pulling directly in line. WARNING: The voltage test point is a capacitance device and is not directly connected to the conductor. Do not use conventional voltage measuring equipment. Follow the manufacturer’s directions for the specific meter used. Test with a suitable sensing device, made for use with separable connectors manufactured with capacitive test points, to determine if the cable is energized. Contamination, moisture, dirt, or incorrect measuring equipment can provide a false “no voltage” indication. Treat the elbow as energized until the “no voltage” test point indication is confirmed by other means to prevent serious or fatal injury. After voltage detection, clean and lubricate the inside surface of the cap with silicone grease and replace it on the test point.
