Overview

The ABB 375LR-K-5250 is a 200 ampere, 35kV loadbreak elbow connector designed for reliable, high-voltage cable terminations in medium-voltage distribution systems. This connector features a bi-metal compression lug that ensures compatibility with both aluminum and copper conductors, supporting sizes from 2/0 to 3/0 AWG (compressed stranded) or 67.43 mm² (solid). The unit accommodates cable insulation diameters between 1.090 and 1.310 inches, making it suitable for a range of medium-voltage cable types used in utility, industrial, and commercial applications. Engineered for loadbreak operations, this elbow connector allows for safe and efficient connection and disconnection under load, reducing downtime during maintenance or reconfiguration. The absence of a test point simplifies installation while maintaining compliance with industry standards for medium-voltage systems. The bi-metal construction ensures long-term electrical integrity and corrosion resistance, critical for outdoor and underground installations where environmental exposure is a concern. Common applications include pad-mounted transformers, switchgear, and underground residential or commercial distribution networks. The 375LR series is a proven solution in ABB’s lineup, trusted for its durability and consistent performance in harsh operating conditions. For specifiers and contractors, this connector provides a cost-effective, field-proven option for medium-voltage cable terminations where reliability and ease of use are paramount.

How to Install the 375LR/376LR Loadbreak Elbow Connectors

This guide provides step-by-step instructions for the safe and proper installation of 375LR (without test point) and 376LR (with test point) loadbreak elbow connectors on UD cable with concentric neutral and extruded insulation shielding.

Estimated time: 1h 30m

Tools needed:

Probe wrench, Crimp tool (specific to compression lug), Wire brush, Wire strippers, Hotstick (for operation and cap removal), Suitable sensing device (for 376LR voltage test point)

Supplies needed:

375LR or 376LR Elbow Connector Housing, Compression Lug, Probe, Lubricant (supplied, do not substitute), UD cable, No. 14 AWG (2.5mm) copper wire (or equivalent for grounding), Appropriate ground connector, HV insulated cap(s) or connector(s) (if replacing shipping covers), Silicone grease (for 376LR test point cap)

  1. Perform Pre-Installation Checks and Cable Training

DANGER: All apparatus must be de-energized during installation or removal of parts, except for test point caps and indicators. Inspect all parts for damage, proper rating, and compatibility with mating components. Check the package contents for completeness. Thread the probe into the compression lug to ensure free movement for approximately four turns before becoming snug; replace damaged components if resistance is encountered. Train the UD cable as shown in the documentation, ensuring a minimum of 20 inches beyond the end of the cable pad mount transformer to ease future operation. Cut excess cable squarely at the center line of the bushing.

  2. Prepare the Cable

Unwrap and bind the concentric neutral wires 8-1/2 inches back from the end of the cable. Remove the shield and insulation from the cable end, cutting squarely and taking extreme care not to nick the conductor. Wire brush the bare aluminum conductors thoroughly and immediately install the compression lug. Rotate the lug to spread the inhibitor. Position the compression lug so that its contact threaded hole aligns with the bushing bore. Refer to the crimp chart for recommended crimp tool information, starting the crimp at the crimp line mark and rotating 180 degrees for each successive crimp. Carefully wipe any excessive inhibitor from the outside of the lug and cable. Remove the insulation shield as shown, then bevel the insulation end to a maximum of 1/8 inch. Thoroughly clean the insulation to remove all traces of conductive residue, ensuring a straight, smooth, and squared finish without cuts or nicks.

  3. Assemble the Elbow Connector

Lubricate the cable insulation and the inside of the elbow housing with the supplied lubricant. DO NOT SUBSTITUTE other lubricants, as they may be harmful. Keep the insulation clean of dirt and grime. Slide the elbow connector onto the cable using a back-and-forth twisting motion. Wipe off all excess grease. Align the elbow with the compression lug's threaded hole. Thread the probe into the lug by hand, being careful not to cross-thread. The probe must turn freely for approximately four turns before becoming snug. Tighten the probe with the probe wrench until the wrench bends, indicating proper torque.

  4. Connect Concentric Neutral Wires

Using a separate No. 14 AWG (2.5mm) copper wire or equivalent, insert one end through the grounding eye on the elbow. Twist it tight, taking care not to damage the eye. Twist all neutral wires together and connect them to ground using an appropriate connector. Ensure adequate slack in the wires to allow for future elbow operation.

  5. Connect Elbow to Bushing Plug

DANGER: Lubricate the receptacle portion of the elbow connector and the mating bushing ONLY IF THE TRANSFORMER AND ELBOW ARE KNOWN TO BE DE-ENERGIZED. DO NOT OPERATE BY HAND. Securely fasten a hotstick to the loadbreak connector pulling eye. After establishing firm footing and positive control, insert the probe tip approximately 2 inches into the bushing. Immediately push the elbow home with a fast, firm, straight motion, applying sufficient force to engage the internal lock on the elbow connector and bushing interface. Do not hold the elbow in the partially inserted position.
