How to Install 375LR/376LR Loadbreak Elbow Connectors
This guide provides step-by-step instructions for the safe installation and wiring of 375LR and 376LR Loadbreak Elbow Connectors on UD cables, ensuring proper assembly and connection.
Estimated time: 1h 30m
Tools needed:
Probe Wrench, Crimp tool, Wire brush, Cable cut back template, Wire strippers, Pliers
Supplies needed:
Elbow Connector Housing, Compression Lug, Probe, Lubricant (Do Not Substitute), Copper wire (No. 14 AWG / 2.5mm), Appropriate connector (for neutral to ground), HV insulated cap(s) or connector(s)
- Prepare for Installation and Safety Checks
Ensure all apparatus is de-energized before beginning installation. Inspect the package contents and all components for completeness, damage, proper rating, and compatibility with mating parts. Verify the probe threads freely into the compression lug. Remove any protective shipping covers and replace with appropriate HV insulated caps or connectors.
- Prepare the Cable
Train the cable to ease future operation and cut any excess cable squarely at the center line of the bushing. Unwrap and bind the concentric neutral wires 8-1/2 inches back from the cable end. Carefully remove the insulation shield and insulation from the cable end, ensuring not to nick the conductor. Wire brush the bare aluminum conductors and immediately install the compression lug, rotating to spread inhibitor. Align the lug's threaded hole with the bushing bore, then crimp according to the lug's chart. Remove the remaining insulation shield, bevel the insulation end by 1/8 inch maximum, and thoroughly clean the insulation.
- Assemble the Elbow Connector
Lubricate the cable insulation and the inside of the elbow housing using only the supplied lubricant. Slide the elbow connector onto the cable with a back-and-forth twisting motion, wiping off any excess grease. Align the elbow with the compression lug's threaded hole. Hand-thread the probe into the lug, ensuring it turns freely for approximately four turns before becoming snug. Tighten the probe with the probe wrench until the wrench bends.
- Connect the Concentric Neutral
Insert one end of a separate No. 14 AWG (2.5mm) copper wire or equivalent through the grounding eye on the elbow and twist it tight, taking care not to damage the eye. Twist all neutral wires together and connect them to ground using an appropriate connector, ensuring adequate slack for elbow operation.
- Connect Elbow to Bushing Plug
Lubricate the receptacle portion of the elbow connector and the mating bushing with the supplied lubricant ONLY if both the transformer and elbow are confirmed to be de-energized. Connect the elbow to the bushing plug, ensuring a firm and straight motion to engage the internal lock.
