How to Install Elastimold 375LR/376LR Loadbreak Elbow Connectors
This guide provides step-by-step instructions for preparing the cable, assembling the elbow connector, and making the final connection to a 35kV class loadbreak bushing.
Estimated time: 45m
Tools needed:
Wire brush, Crimp tool (refer to lug's crimp chart), Probe wrench, Wire strippers or knife, Hotstick (minimum 8 ft insulated live-line tool)
Supplies needed:
Elbow Connector Housing, Compression Lug, Probe, Lubricant (supplied, Do Not Substitute), UD cable, No. 14 AWG (2.5mm) copper wire, Appropriate connector (for grounding neutral wires), Insulated cap (for bushing, if not already present)
- De-energize and Prepare Cable
Safety Warning: Ensure all apparatus is de-energized before beginning installation. Train the UD cable to ease future operation, ensuring at least 20 inches beyond the end of the cable. Cut excess cable squarely at the center line of the bushing. Unwrap and bind concentric neutral wires 8-1/2 inches back from the cable end. Remove the insulation shield and insulation from the cable end, cutting squarely without nicking the conductor.
- Install Compression Lug
Wire brush the bare aluminum conductors immediately. Install the supplied compression lug onto the conductor, rotating it to spread the inhibitor. Position the lug so its contact threaded hole aligns with the bushing bore. Crimp the lug according to the crimp chart, starting at the crimp line mark and rotating 180 degrees for each successive crimp. Carefully wipe any excessive inhibitor from the outside of the lug and cable.
- Final Cable Insulation Preparation
Remove the remaining insulation shield as shown in the diagram (6-7/8" from cable end). Bevel the insulation end a maximum of 1/8 inch. Thoroughly clean the insulation to remove all traces of conductive residue.
- Assemble Elbow Connector
Lubricate the cable insulation and the inside of the elbow housing with the supplied lubricant; do not substitute. Slide the elbow connector onto the cable using a back-and-forth twisting motion. Wipe off any excess grease. Align the elbow with the compression lug’s threaded hole. Thread the probe into the lug by hand, ensuring it turns freely for approximately four turns before becoming snug. Tighten the probe with the supplied probe wrench until the wrench bends.
- Connect Concentric Neutral
Insert one end of a separate No. 14 AWG (2.5mm) copper wire through the grounding eye on the elbow and twist it tight, taking care not to damage the eye. Twist all neutral wires together and connect them to ground using an appropriate connector. Ensure adequate slack in the wires for elbow operation.
- Connect Elbow to De-energized Bushing
Safety Warning: Lubricate the receptacle portion of the elbow connector and the mating bushing with the supplied lubricant ONLY if the transformer and elbow are known to be de-energized. Do not operate by hand.
- Perform Energized Loadmake Operation (Final Connection)
Safety Warning: This operation requires a full insulated "hotstick" and competent personnel. Ensure the area is clear. Remove the bushing's insulated cap using a hotstick. Securely fasten a hotstick to the elbow's pulling eye. With firm footing and positive control, withdraw the elbow from its parking stand with a fast, straight, firm motion. Insert the probe tip approximately 2 inches into the bushing, then immediately push the elbow home with a fast, firm, straight motion, applying sufficient force to engage the internal lock.
