How to Install Elastimold 375LR/376LR Loadbreak Elbow Connectors

This guide provides step-by-step instructions for the safe installation and initial connection of Elastimold 375LR and 376LR Loadbreak Elbow Connectors to UD cable and a 35kV class bushing or accessory device.

Estimated time: 1h 30m

Tools needed:

Probe wrench, Crimp tool, Wire brush, Wire strippers, Hotstick, Suitable sensing device (for capacitive test points, if 376LR)

Supplies needed:

Elbow Connector Housing (375LR or 376LR), Compression Lug, Probe, Lubricant (supplied, do not substitute), Copper wire (No. 14 AWG / 2.5mm), Appropriate connector (for grounding neutral wires), Insulated cap (if not already on bushing), Silicone grease (for 376LR test point cap), UD cable, Mating 35kV class loadbreak bushing or accessory device

  1. Prepare for Installation and Perform Initial Checks

DANGER: Ensure all apparatus is de-energized before beginning installation. This product should only be installed by competent personnel trained in high-voltage safety practices. Check the package contents to ensure all parts (Elbow Connector Housing, Compression Lug, Probe, Probe Wrench, Lubricant) are complete and undamaged. Verify all components are compatible and fit properly with the cable and/or mating products. Thread the probe into the compression lug by hand to check for resistance; replace damaged components if resistance is encountered. Gather all required tools and maintain cleanliness throughout the procedure.

  2. Train and Cut the Cable

Train the UD cable as shown in the documentation (e.g., 20 inches minimum beyond the end of the cable pad mount transformer) to facilitate future operation. Cut the excess cable squarely at the center line of the bushing.

  3. Prepare the Cable End

Unwrap and bind the concentric neutral wires 8-1/2 inches back from the end of the cable. Remove the insulation shield and insulation from the cable end, cutting squarely and taking extreme care not to nick the conductor. Wire brush the bare aluminum conductors immediately and install the compression lug. Rotate the lug to spread the inhibitor. Position the compression lug so its contact threaded hole aligns with the bushing bore. Crimp the lug according to the crimp chart provided, starting at the crimp line mark and rotating 180 degrees for each successive crimp. Carefully wipe any excessive inhibitor from the outside of the lug and cable. Remove the remaining insulation shield as shown in the template, and bevel the insulation end a maximum of 1/8 inch. Thoroughly clean the insulation to remove all traces of conductive residue.

  4. Assemble the Elbow Connector

Lubricate the cable insulation and the inside of the elbow housing using only the supplied lubricant; do not substitute. Keep the insulation clean of dirt and grime. Slide the elbow connector onto the cable using a back-and-forth twisting motion. Wipe off any excess grease. Align the elbow with the compression lug’s threaded hole. Thread the probe into the lug by hand, ensuring not to cross-thread. The probe should turn freely for approximately four turns before becoming snug. Tighten the probe with the probe wrench until the wrench bends, indicating proper torque.

  5. Connect the Concentric Neutral

Insert one end of a separate No. 14 AWG (2.5mm) copper wire or equivalent through the grounding eye on the elbow. Twist it tight, being careful not to damage the eye. Twist all neutral wires together and connect them to ground using an appropriate connector. Ensure adequate slack is provided in the neutral wires to allow for elbow operation.

  6. Connect the Elbow to the Bushing

DANGER: Lubricate the receptacle portion of the elbow connector and the mating bushing only if the transformer and elbow are known to be de-energized. Do not operate by hand; use a full insulated hotstick. If an insulated cap is present on the bushing, remove it by attaching a hotstick tool to the insulated cap pulling eye and following its specific instructions. Securely fasten a hotstick (minimum 8 ft recommended) to the loadbreak connector pulling eye. After establishing firm footing and positive control of the elbow connector, insert the probe tip approximately 2 inches into the bushing. Immediately push the elbow home with a fast, firm, straight motion, applying sufficient force to engage the internal lock on the elbow connector and bushing interface.

  7. Perform Voltage Test (for 376LR with Test Point)

WARNING: This step applies only to 376LR connectors equipped with a test point. The voltage test point is a capacitance device and is not directly connected to the conductor. Remove the test point cap with a hotstick, peeling it off at an angle rather than pulling directly in line. Test with a suitable sensing device designed for capacitive test points to determine if the cable is energized. Do not use conventional voltage measuring equipment. WARNING: Contamination, moisture, dirt, or incorrect measuring equipment can provide a false "no voltage" indication. Treat the elbow as energized until the "no voltage" indication is confirmed by other means to prevent serious or fatal injury. After voltage detection, clean and lubricate the inside surface of the cap with silicone grease and replace it tightly on the test point.
