How to Install 161LR/162LR Loadbreak Elbow Connectors
A comprehensive guide for preparing cables, assembling, and connecting 161LR and 162LR Loadbreak Elbow Connectors to a 15kV class bushing or accessory device.
Estimated time: 1h 30m
Tools needed:
Probe wrench, Wire strippers, Wire brush, Crimp tool, Hotstick, Cable cutters or knife
Supplies needed:
161LR or 162LR Loadbreak Elbow Connector Kit (includes elbow housing, compression lug, probe, lubricant), UD Cable (appropriate for the connector), Copper wire (No. 14 AWG / 2.5mm), Appropriate connector for neutral wires, Cold shrink sealing kit (if applicable for cable type), Conductive copper tape (if applicable for cable type), Vinyl tape (if applicable for cable type), Cleaning agent
- Ensure Safety and Inspect Components
Before beginning installation, ensure all apparatus is de-energized to prevent serious or fatal injury. Inspect all components of the 161LR/162LR kit for damage, proper rating, and compatibility with the cable and mating bushing. Check the compression lug and probe threads for smooth engagement.
- Prepare the Cable
Train the cable to ensure adequate slack for future operation. Based on your cable type (non-jacketed, jacketed concentric neutral, jacketed with drain wires, or jacketed copper tape shield), follow the specific instructions to manage neutral or drain wires, cut the cable squarely at the bushing centerline, and remove the outer jacket and/or copper tape shield to the specified lengths. If using a cold shrink sealing kit, slide the cold shrink tube onto the cable at this stage.
- Prepare Conductor and Insulation
Remove 2-1/8 inches (55mm) of the insulation shield and insulation from the cable end, ensuring a square cut without nicking the conductor. Wire brush the bare aluminum conductors thoroughly and immediately install the compression lug, rotating it to spread any inhibitor. Position the lug so its threaded hole aligns with the bushing bore, then crimp it according to the manufacturer's chart. Carefully wipe off any excess inhibitor. Remove 6-7/8 inches (175mm) of the insulation shield and bevel the insulation end by a maximum of 1/8 inch (5mm). Thoroughly clean the insulation to remove all dirt and inhibitor.
- Assemble the Elbow Connector
Apply the supplied lubricant to the cable insulation and the inside of the elbow housing; do not use substitute lubricants. Slide the elbow connector onto the cable using a back-and-forth twisting motion, then wipe off any excess lubricant. Align the elbow with the compression lug's threaded hole. Thread the probe into the lug by hand, ensuring it turns freely for approximately four turns before becoming snug. Tighten the probe with the probe wrench until the wrench bends.
- Ground the Elbow
Insert one end of a separate No. 14 AWG (2.5mm) copper wire or equivalent through the grounding eye on the elbow and twist it tightly, taking care not to damage the eye. Twist all neutral wires together and connect them to ground using an appropriate connector, ensuring adequate slack for elbow operation. If using a cold shrink grounding kit, refer to its specific instructions.
- Connect Elbow to Bushing
Crucially, confirm that both the transformer and the elbow are de-energized before proceeding. Lubricate the receptacle portion of the elbow connector and the mating bushing with the supplied lubricant. Using a fully insulated hotstick tool, securely fasten it to the loadbreak connector pulling eye and connect the elbow to the bushing with a fast, firm, straight motion, ensuring the internal lock engages.
