How to Install 375LR/376LR Loadbreak Elbow Connectors

This guide provides step-by-step instructions for the safe installation and initial assembly of Elastimold 375LR (without test point) and 376LR (with test point) Loadbreak Elbow Connectors on UD cable.

Estimated time: 1h

Tools needed:

Probe Wrench, Wire brush, Crimp tool, Hotstick, Wire strippers

Supplies needed:

Elbow Connector Housing, Compression Lug, Probe, Lubricant (Do Not Substitute), No. 14 AWG / 2.5mm copper wire, Appropriate grounding connector, HV insulated cap(s)

  1. Perform Pre-Installation Checks and Safety Measures

DANGER: Ensure all apparatus is de-energized during installation. Inspect all parts for damage, proper rating, and compatibility with mating parts. Check the package contents for completeness. Verify all components fit properly with the cable and/or mating products. Test threads by hand-threading the probe into the compression lug; if resistance is met, replace damaged components. Lubricate the test point cap (376LR only) and assemble tightly. If supplied with protective shipping covers, remove them and replace with appropriate HV insulated caps or connectors before submerging or energizing the circuit.

  2. Train and Cut the Cable

Train the UD cable as shown in the documentation to ease future operation. Cut any excess cable squarely at the center line of the bushing, ensuring a minimum of 20 inches beyond the end of the cable pad mount transformer.

  3. Prepare the Cable End

Unwrap and bind the concentric neutral wires 8-1/2 inches back from the end of the cable. Carefully remove the shield and insulation from the cable end, cutting squarely and taking care not to nick the conductor. Wire brush the bare aluminum conductors immediately and install the compression lug. Rotate the lug to spread the inhibitor. Position the compression lug so its CONTACT THREADED HOLE ALIGNS WITH THE BUSHING BORE. Crimp the lug according to the crimp chart, starting at the crimp line mark and rotating 180 degrees for each successive crimp. Carefully wipe any excessive inhibitor from the outside of the lug and cable. Remove the insulation shield as shown and bevel the insulation end a maximum of 1/8 inch. Thoroughly clean the insulation to remove all traces of conductive residue.

  4. Assemble the Elbow Connector

Lubricate the cable insulation and the inside of the elbow housing with the supplied lubricant. DO NOT SUBSTITUTE other lubricants, as they may be harmful. Keep the insulation clean of dirt and grime. Slide the elbow connector onto the cable using a back-and-forth twisting motion. Wipe off all excess grease. Align the elbow with the compression lug’s threaded hole. Thread the probe into the lug by hand, taking care not to cross-thread. The probe must turn freely for approximately four turns before becoming snug. Tighten the probe with the wrench until the wrench bends.

  5. Connect the Concentric Neutral Wires

Using a separate copper wire (No. 14 AWG / 2.5mm or equivalent), insert one end through the grounding eye on the elbow. Twist it tight, taking care not to damage the eye. Twist all neutral wires together and connect them to ground using an appropriate connector. Ensure adequate slack in the wires for future elbow operation.

  6. Connect Elbow to Bushing Plug

Lubricate the receptacle portion of the elbow connector and the mating bushing with the supplied lubricant. CAUTION: Lubricate ONLY if the transformer and elbow are known to be de-energized. Connect the elbow to the bushing plug. DO NOT OPERATE BY HAND; refer to operating instructions for energized operations.
