How to Install Elastimold 273RLR/274RLR Loadbreak Replacement Elbow Connectors
This guide provides step-by-step instructions for the safe installation and initial setup of Elastimold 273RLR (without Test Point) and 274RLR (with Test Point) Loadbreak Replacement Elbow Connectors on UD cable.
Estimated time: 1h
Tools needed:
Hotstick, Probe Wrench, Wire brush, Wire strippers, Suitable sensing device (for capacitive test points, 274RLR only)
Supplies needed:
Replacement Elbow Connector Housing, Compression Lug, Probe, Lubricant (supplied, do not substitute), Hose Clamp, Copper wire (No. 14 AWG / 2.5mm or equivalent), Appropriate connector (for ground)
- De-energize Apparatus and Perform Initial Checks
DANGER: All apparatus MUST be de-energized during installation or removal of parts. Ensure all components are complete, undamaged, and compatible with the cable and mating products. Thread the probe into the compression lug to check for resistance; replace if damaged. Read all instructions before proceeding and maintain cleanliness.
- Remove Existing Livefront Terminator
Remove the rubber cap from the existing terminator. Cut off the connector at the top of the terminator. Disconnect the ground lead from the base of the terminator. Carefully remove the terminator housing from the cable.
- Prepare Cable
Train the cable to be straight and in-line with the bushing centerline. Measure and cut the cable to 10-1/2 inches from the bushing centerline. If the insulation shield measures less than 6-1/2 inches from the end of the cut cable, proceed. If greater, consult an ELASTIMOLD representative. Remove 1-3/8 inches of cable insulation from the end, cutting squarely and ensuring not to nick the conductor.
- Install Compression Lug
Wire brush the bare aluminum conductor immediately. Install the compression lug, rotating it to spread the inhibitor. Position the lug so its contact threaded hole aligns with the bushing bore. Crimp the lug according to the crimp chart, starting at the crimp line mark and rotating 180 degrees for each successive crimp. Carefully wipe any excessive inhibitor from the outside of the lug and cable.
- Assemble Elbow Housing
Lubricate the cable insulation and the inside of the elbow housing with the supplied lubricant; DO NOT SUBSTITUTE. Keep the insulation clean and avoid introducing excess grease into the gap between the lug and insulation. Slide the elbow connector onto the cable using a back-and-forth twisting motion. Wipe off all excess grease.
- Thread Probe into Lug
Align the elbow with the compression lug's threaded hole. Thread the probe into the lug by hand, ensuring not to cross-thread. The probe should turn freely for approximately four turns before becoming snug. Tighten the probe with the wrench until the wrench bends.
- Connect Concentric Neutral
Insert one end of a separate copper wire (No. 14 AWG / 2.5mm or equivalent) through the grounding eye on the elbow. Twist it tight, taking care not to damage the eye. Twist all neutral wires together and connect them to ground using an appropriate connector, providing adequate slack for elbow operation. Add the supplied hose clamp as shown, tightening it snugly but do not overtighten.
- Connect Elbow to Bushing Plug
Lubricate the receptacle portion of the elbow connector and the mating bushing with the supplied lubricant. LUBRICATE ONLY IF THE TRANSFORMER AND ELBOW ARE KNOWN TO BE DE-ENERGIZED. Position the elbow connector receptacle area over the bushing plug, inserting the elbow male contact into the bushing until the first slight resistance is felt. Immediately push the elbow home with a fast, firm, straight motion to engage the internal lock on the elbow and bushing interface. DO NOT OPERATE BY HAND.
- Perform Voltage Test (274RLR Only)
For 274RLR connectors, remove the test point cap with a hotstick, peeling it off at an angle. WARNING: The voltage test point is a capacitance device, not directly connected to the conductor. Do not use conventional voltage measuring equipment. Use a suitable sensing device designed for capacitive test points and follow its manufacturer's directions. Treat the elbow as energized until the 'no voltage' indication is confirmed by other means to prevent serious injury. After testing, clean and lubricate the inside surface of the cap with silicone grease and replace it tightly on the test point.
