How to Install 161LR and 162LR Loadbreak Elbow Connectors

This guide provides step-by-step instructions for the safe and proper installation of Elastimold 161LR and 162LR Loadbreak Elbow Connectors on various UD cables.

Estimated time: 1h 30m

Tools needed:

Probe Wrench, Wire brush, Crimp tool, Hotstick, Wire strippers, Cable cutting tool

Supplies needed:

Elbow Connector Housing, Compression Lug, Probe, Lubricant (supplied), Copper wire (No. 14 AWG / 2.5mm or equivalent), Appropriate connector for neutral wires, Vinyl tape (if using jacketed cable with drain wires), Conductive copper tape (if using jacketed copper tape shield cable), Cold shrink tube (if using sealing kits)

  1. Prepare for Installation and Safety Checks

Before starting, ensure all apparatus are de-energized. Inspect all package contents and components (Elbow Connector Housing, Compression Lug, Probe, Probe Wrench, Lubricant) for completeness, damage, and proper fit with the cable and mating products. Check the probe threads by hand-threading it into the compression lug; replace if resistance is encountered. Have all required tools ready and maintain a clean work area.

  2. Initial Cable Training and Jacket/Shield Preparation

Train the cable to ensure adequate slack for ease of operation. Based on your cable type (non-jacketed concentric neutral, jacketed concentric neutral, jacketed with drain wires, or jacketed copper tape shield), prepare the neutral wires or grounding braid, remove the outer jacket and/or shield to the specified lengths, and cut the cable squarely at the bushing centerline. If using a sealing kit (e.g., 200ECS, 200ECS-G1, G2, or G3), slide the cold shrink tube onto the cable loose end first.

  3. Conductor Preparation and Lug Installation

Remove the shield and insulation 2-1/8” (55mm) from the cable end, cutting squarely and taking care not to nick the conductor. Wire brush bare aluminum conductors thoroughly and immediately install the compression lug, rotating it to spread inhibitor. Position the lug so its threaded hole aligns with the bushing bore. Crimp the lug according to the manufacturer's chart, starting at the crimp line mark and rotating 180 degrees for each successive crimp. Carefully wipe off any excess inhibitor.

  4. Final Insulation Preparation

Remove the insulation shield 6-7/8” (175mm) from the cable end, ensuring a straight, smooth, and squared cut without nicks. Bevel the insulation end a maximum of 1/8” (5mm). Thoroughly clean the insulation to remove all traces of dirt or excess inhibitor.

  5. Assemble the Elbow Connector

Lubricate the cable insulation and the inside of the elbow housing with the supplied lubricant; do not substitute. Slide the elbow connector onto the cable using a back-and-forth twisting motion, then wipe off any excess lubricant. Align the elbow with the compression lug’s threaded hole. Thread the probe into the lug by hand, ensuring it turns freely for approximately four turns before becoming snug. Tighten the probe with the supplied wrench until the wrench bends.

  6. Ground the Elbow

Insert one end of a separate No. 14 AWG (2.5mm) copper wire or equivalent through the grounding eye on the elbow and twist it tightly, taking care not to damage the eye. Twist all neutral wires together and connect them to ground using an appropriate connector, ensuring adequate slack for elbow operation. If using a cold shrink grounding kit, refer to its specific instructions.

  7. Connect the Elbow to the Bushing

Before proceeding, confirm that both the transformer and the elbow are de-energized. Lubricate the receptacle portion of the elbow connector and the mating bushing with the supplied lubricant. Securely fasten a hotstick to the loadbreak connector pulling eye. Insert the probe tip approximately 2” (50mm) into the bushing, then immediately push the elbow home with a fast, firm, straight motion, using sufficient force to engage the internal lock on the elbow connector and bushing interface. Do not operate by hand.
