How to Install 161LR/162LR Loadbreak Elbow Connectors
This guide provides step-by-step instructions for the safe installation and wiring of 161LR and 162LR Loadbreak Elbow Connectors on various underground distribution cables, ensuring proper connection to a 15kV class loadbreak bushing.
Estimated time: 1h 30m
Tools needed:
Wire strippers/cutters, Wire brush, Crimp tool (refer to lug instructions), Probe wrench, Hotstick, Suitable voltage sensing device (for test point)
Supplies needed:
161LR or 162LR Elbow Connector Housing, Compression Lug, Probe, Lubricant (supplied, do not substitute), Copper wire (No. 14 AWG / 2.5mm or equivalent), Appropriate connector (for neutral wires), Cold shrink tube (if using sealing kit), Conductive copper tape (if using copper tape shield kit), Vinyl tape (if using jacketed cable with drain wires)
- Perform Initial Safety Checks and Component Inspection
DANGER: Ensure all apparatus is de-energized before beginning installation or removal of parts. Do not touch or move energized products. Inspect all package contents to ensure they are complete and undamaged. Verify all components fit properly with the cable and mating products. Check the probe threads by hand-threading into the compression lug; if resistance is encountered, inspect for damage and replace components as needed. Have all required tools ready and maintain cleanliness throughout the procedure.
- Prepare the Cable for Connector Installation
Train the cable to ensure adequate slack for operation. Prepare neutral or drain wires according to your specific cable type (e.g., pull extra length, bind, or remove outer jacket). Cut the cable squarely at the centerline of the bushing. Remove 2-1/8 inches (55mm) of the shield and insulation from the cable end, taking care not to nick the conductor. Wire brush bare aluminum conductors immediately and install the compression lug, rotating to spread inhibitor. Position the lug so the contact threaded hole aligns with the bushing bore. Crimp the lug according to the manufacturer's chart, starting at the crimp line mark and rotating 180 degrees for each successive crimp. Carefully wipe off excess inhibitor. Remove the insulation shield 6-7/8 inches (175mm) from the cable end, ensuring a straight, smooth, and squared cut. Bevel the insulation end a maximum of 1/8 inch (5mm). Thoroughly clean the insulation to remove all traces of dirt or excess inhibitor.
- Assemble the Elbow Connector
Lubricate the cable insulation and the inside of the elbow housing with the supplied lubricant. DO NOT SUBSTITUTE other lubricants, as they may be harmful. Slide the elbow connector onto the cable using a back-and-forth twisting motion. Wipe off all excess lubricant. Align the elbow with the compression lug's threaded hole. Thread the probe into the lug by hand, ensuring it turns freely for approximately four turns before becoming snug. Tighten the probe with the probe wrench until the wrench bends, indicating proper torque.
- Ground the Elbow Connector
Insert one end of a separate copper wire (No. 14 AWG / 2.5mm or equivalent) through the grounding eye on the elbow. Twist the wire tightly, taking care not to damage the eye. Twist all neutral wires together and connect them to ground using an appropriate connector. Ensure adequate slack in the wires to allow for elbow operation. If using a cold shrink grounding kit, refer to its specific instructions.
- Connect the Elbow to the Bushing Plug
DANGER: CONFIRM THAT THE TRANSFORMER AND ELBOW ARE DE-ENERGIZED before proceeding. Lubricate the receptacle portion of the elbow connector and the mating bushing with the supplied lubricant. Operate the connection using a full insulated hotstick type tool. DO NOT OPERATE BY HAND. Insert the probe tip approximately 2 inches (50mm) into the bushing, then immediately push the elbow home with a fast, firm, straight motion, using sufficient force to engage the internal lock on the elbow connector and bushing interface.
- Perform Voltage Test (162LR only)
If installing a 162LR connector with a test point, you can use it to determine if the circuit is energized. Remove the test point cap with a hotstick, peeling it off at an angle. WARNING: The voltage test point is a capacitance device and is not directly connected to the conductor. Do not use conventional voltage measuring equipment. Follow the manufacturer’s directions for your specific sensing device. Treat the elbow as energized until a 'no voltage' indication is confirmed by other means. After testing, clean the inside surface of the cap, lubricate with silicone lubricant, and replace it on the test point.
