How to Install 161LR/162LR Loadbreak Elbow Connectors
A comprehensive guide for the safe and proper installation of 161LR and 162LR Loadbreak Elbow Connectors on various UD cables, including cable preparation, lug crimping, elbow assembly, and grounding. All apparatus must be de-energized during installation.
Estimated time: 1h 30m
Tools needed:
Probe Wrench, Wire brush, Crimp tool, Hotstick
Supplies needed:
161LR/162LR Elbow Connector Kit (Housing, Compression Lug, Probe, Lubricant), Separate copper wire (No. 14 AWG / 2.5mm or equivalent), Appropriate ground connector, Vinyl tape (if applicable), Cold shrink tube (if using sealing kit), Conductive copper tape (if using sealing kit)
- Train Cable and Prepare Neutral Wires
Train the cable to ensure sufficient slack (24-36 inches or 610-914mm) beyond the bushing centerline for ease of operation. Depending on your cable type (non-jacketed, jacketed, drain wire, or copper tape shield), manage the neutral or ground wires by unwrapping, binding, or removing the outer jacket as specified in the detailed instructions for your cable type. Cut the excess cable squarely at the bushing centerline.
- Prepare Cable End and Crimp Lug
Remove 2-1/8 inches (55mm) of the shield and insulation from the cable end, ensuring a square cut without nicking the conductor. Wire brush bare aluminum conductors immediately. Install the compression lug, rotating it to spread inhibitor, and align its threaded hole with the bushing bore. Crimp the lug according to the manufacturer's chart, rotating 180 degrees for each successive crimp. Carefully wipe off any excess inhibitor. Remove the insulation shield 6-7/8 inches (175mm) back and bevel the insulation end by a maximum of 1/8 inch (5mm). Thoroughly clean the insulation.
- Assemble Elbow Housing and Probe
Lubricate the cable insulation and the inside of the elbow housing with the supplied lubricant; do not substitute. Slide the elbow connector onto the cable using a back-and-forth twisting motion, then wipe off all excess lubricant. Align the elbow with the compression lug's threaded hole. Thread the probe into the lug by hand, ensuring it turns freely for approximately four turns before becoming snug. Tighten the probe with the probe wrench until the wrench bends.
- Ground the Elbow and Connect Neutrals
Insert one end of a separate copper wire (No. 14 AWG / 2.5mm or equivalent) through the grounding eye on the elbow and twist it tightly, taking care not to damage the eye. Twist all neutral wires together and connect them to ground using an appropriate connector, ensuring adequate slack for elbow operation. If using a cold shrink grounding kit, refer to its specific instructions.
- Connect Elbow to Bushing
CONFIRM THAT THE TRANSFORMER AND ELBOW ARE DE-ENERGIZED before proceeding. Lubricate the receptacle portion of the elbow connector and the mating bushing with the supplied lubricant. Securely fasten a hotstick to the loadbreak connector pulling eye. Remove any insulated cap from the bushing. Insert the probe tip approximately 2 inches (50mm) into the bushing, then immediately push the elbow home with a fast, firm, straight motion to engage the internal lock.
