How to Install the 162LR Loadbreak Elbow Connector

This guide provides step-by-step instructions for the safe and proper installation of the 162LR Loadbreak Elbow Connector, including cable preparation, component assembly, grounding, and final connection to a 15kV class bushing.

Estimated time: 1h 30m

Tools needed:

Probe wrench, Crimp tool, Wire brush, Wire strippers or cable knife, Hotstick, Vinyl tape (if applicable)

Supplies needed:

162LR Elbow Connector Kit (includes Housing, Compression Lug, Probe, Lubricant), Copper ground wire (No. 14 AWG / 2.5mm or equivalent), Appropriate connector for neutral to ground, Cold shrink tube (if using a sealing kit), Conductive copper tape (if using a copper tape shield kit), HV insulated cap(s) or connector(s) (to replace shipping covers)

  1. Perform Initial Safety Checks and Cable Training

DANGER: Ensure all apparatus is de-energized before beginning installation. This product must be installed only by competent personnel trained in good safety practices involving high voltage electrical equipment. Inspect all components for damage, proper rating, and compatibility with the cable and mating products. Train the cable to ensure adequate slack for future operation. If the product is supplied with protective shipping covers, remove them and replace with appropriate HV insulated caps or connectors before submerging or energizing the circuit.

  2. Prepare the Cable End for the Connector

Cut the cable squarely at the centerline of the bushing. Remove the outer jacket (e.g., 9-5/8" or 240mm) and manage neutral/drain wires or copper tape shield according to your specific cable type (unwrap, bind, fold back, or wrap conductive tape). If using a cold shrink sealing kit, slide the cold shrink tube onto the cable, loose end first. Remove the insulation shield (e.g., 6-7/8" or 175mm) and the insulation (e.g., 2-1/8" or 55mm) from the cable end, cutting squarely without nicking the conductor. Bevel the insulation end by a maximum of 1/8" (5mm).

  3. Install the Compression Lug and Assemble the Elbow

Wire brush the bare aluminum conductors immediately. Install the compression lug, ensuring the contact threaded hole aligns with the bushing bore. Crimp the lug according to the crimp chart packaged with the compression lug, starting at the crimp line mark and rotating 180 degrees for each successive crimp. Carefully wipe off any excess inhibitor from the outside of the lug and cable. Thoroughly clean the cable insulation to remove all traces of dirt or excess inhibitor. Lubricate the cable insulation and the inside of the elbow housing with the supplied lubricant; DO NOT SUBSTITUTE. Slide the elbow connector onto the cable with a back-and-forth twisting motion and wipe off all excess lubricant. Align the elbow with the compression lug's threaded hole. Thread the probe into the lug by hand, taking care not to cross-thread, until it becomes snug (approximately four turns). Tighten the probe with the probe wrench until the wrench bends.

  4. Ground the Elbow Connector

Insert one end of a separate copper wire (No. 14 AWG / 2.5mm or equivalent) through the grounding eye on the elbow and twist tightly, taking care not to damage the eye. Twist all neutral wires together and connect them to ground using an appropriate connector, ensuring adequate slack in the wires for elbow operation. If using a cold shrink grounding kit, refer to the instructions supplied with that kit to complete the grounding installation.

  5. Connect the Elbow to the Mating Bushing

DANGER: Re-confirm that both the transformer and the elbow are de-energized before proceeding with the connection. Lubricate the receptacle portion of the elbow connector and the mating bushing with the supplied lubricant. Securely fasten a hotstick to the loadbreak connector pulling eye. Insert the elbow connector onto the bushing with a fast, firm, straight motion, using sufficient force to engage the internal lock on the elbow connector and bushing interface. DO NOT OPERATE BY HAND.
