How to Install the 262LRJS Loadbreak Elbow Connector

This guide provides step-by-step instructions for installing the 262LRJS Loadbreak Elbow Connector with Jacket Seal on UD cable, including cable preparation, elbow assembly, and neutral connection.

Estimated time: 1h 30m

Tools needed:

Probe wrench, Hotstick, Crimp tool, Wire brush, Suitable sensing device (for capacitive test points)

Supplies needed:

Elbow Connector Housing, Compression Lug, Probe, Lubricant (Do Not Substitute), 3 Sealing Strips (mastic), Vinyl tape, Separate copper wire (No. 14 AWG / 2.5mm or equivalent), Appropriate connector (for neutral to ground), HV insulated cap(s) or connector(s) (to replace shipping covers)

  1. Perform Initial Checks and Ensure Safety

DANGER: All apparatus must be de-energized during installation or removal of parts. Inspect package contents for completeness and damage. Check all components for proper fit with cable and mating products. Verify probe threads by threading into the compression lug; replace if resistance is encountered. Gather all required tools and maintain cleanliness. If a test point cap is not installed, lubricate and install it. If the product is supplied with protective shipping covers, remove them and replace with appropriate HV insulated caps or connectors before submerging or energizing the circuit.

  2. Train and Cut Cable

Train the cable to ensure sufficient slack for ease of operation. Pull extra cable to 24-26 inches beyond the bushing centerline and mark with tape. Remove the outer jacket 7-3/4 to 8 inches further back from the tape mark. Unwrap the neutral wire past the bushing centerline. Cut the excess cable squarely at the centerline of the bushing.

  3. Apply Mastic and Secure Neutral Wires

Wrap one strip of mastic, stretching slightly, around the jacket. Bend all neutral wires straight back over the mastic and along the cable, pressing them into the mastic. Wrap a second mastic strip completely around the outer jacket, overlapping the imbedded neutral wires. Use a third strip if needed to build up the outer diameter in the area of the first mastic location. Cover all mastic with vinyl tape.

  4. Prepare Insulation and Crimp Compression Lug

Remove insulation shield and insulation from the cable end, cutting squarely and taking care not to nick the conductor. Wire brush bare aluminum conductors and immediately install the compression lug. Rotate the lug to spread inhibitor. Position the compression lug so the contact threaded hole aligns with the bushing bore. Crimp the lug according to the crimp chart, starting at the crimp line mark and rotating 180 degrees for each successive crimp. Carefully wipe excessive inhibitor from the outside of the lug and cable.

  5. Finalize Insulation Preparation

Remove the insulation shield as shown in the cable cut back template (6-7/8 inches from the lug end). Bevel the insulation end 1/8 inch maximum. Thoroughly clean the insulation to remove all traces of conductive residue.

  6. Assemble Elbow Housing

Lubricate the cable insulation and the inside of the elbow housing with the supplied lubricant; DO NOT SUBSTITUTE. Slide the elbow connector onto the cable using a back-and-forth twisting motion. Wipe off all excess lubricant. Align the elbow with the compression lug's threaded hole. Thread the probe into the lug by hand, ensuring not to cross-thread. The probe should turn freely for approximately four turns before becoming snug. Tighten the probe with the wrench until the wrench bends.

  7. Connect Concentric Neutral

Insert one end of a separate copper wire (No. 14 AWG / 2.5mm or equivalent) through the grounding eye on the elbow. Twist it tightly, taking care not to damage the eye. Pull the hood over the concentric neutral seal area on the cable by pulling the tabs and/or rolling the seal down. Twist all neutral wires together and connect them to ground using an appropriate connector. Ensure adequate slack in the wires for elbow operation.

  8. Connect Elbow to Bushing Plug

Lubricate the receptacle portion of the elbow connector and the mating bushing with the supplied lubricant. ONLY LUBRICATE IF THE TRANSFORMER AND ELBOW ARE KNOWN TO BE DE-ENERGIZED. Operate the connection using a full insulated hotstick type live-line tool; DO NOT OPERATE BY HAND. Securely fasten the hotstick to the loadbreak connector pulling eye. Insert the probe tip approximately 2 inches into the bushing, then immediately push the elbow home with a fast, firm, straight motion, using sufficient force to engage the internal lock.
