Overview

The ABB 262LR-D5270 Loadbreak Elbow Connector is a 25kV, 200A rated accessory engineered for underground distribution systems. This elbow connector features a bi-metal compression lug for reliable, long-term connections on 4/0 AWG stranded copper conductors with cable insulation diameters between 0.890 and 1.220 inches. The integrated test point enables safe voltage detection without disconnecting the elbow, reducing downtime during maintenance or fault isolation. The loadbreak design allows hot-swapping under load, minimizing service interruptions in critical applications. The bi-metal compression lug ensures compatibility with both copper and aluminum conductors, providing flexibility in system design. This connector is ideal for pad-mounted transformers, switchgear, and underground residential or commercial feeders. The catalog number follows the ABB 262LR-W5X format, where 'W' represents the insulation diameter code (0.890-1.220 inches) and 'X' denotes the conductor size code (4/0 AWG). The bi-metal compression lug code for 4/0 stranded wire is 260, ensuring optimal electrical and mechanical performance.

How to Install 262LR Loadbreak Elbow Connectors

This guide provides step-by-step instructions for preparing the cable, assembling, and installing the 262LR Loadbreak Elbow Connector onto a de-energized 25kV class bushing.

Estimated time: 1h

Tools needed:

Probe Wrench, Wire brush, Crimp tool, Wire strippers, Utility knife or cable knife, Hotstick

Supplies needed:

Elbow Connector Housing (262LR), Compression Lug, Probe, Lubricant (supplied with kit, do not substitute), Copper wire (No. 14 AWG / 2.5mm or equivalent), Appropriate connector (for neutral wires), Vinyl tape (if using jacketed cable with drain wires), Conductive copper tape (if using 200ECS-G2 kit), Cold shrink tube (if using 200ECS, 200ECS-G1, or 200ECS-G2 sealing kits)

  1. Safety First: De-energize and Inspect Components

DANGER: Confirm that all apparatus in the work area are de-energized before beginning installation. Do not touch or move energized products. Inspect all components (elbow housing, compression lug, probe) for damage, correct rating, and compatibility with the cable and mating bushing. Check the package contents for completeness. Thread the probe into the compression lug by hand to check for resistance; replace damaged components if resistance is encountered.

  2. Prepare the Cable According to Type

DANGER: Ensure the cable is de-energized before proceeding. Train the cable to ensure sufficient slack for future operation. Based on your specific cable type (Non-Jacketed Concentric Neutral, Jacketed Concentric Neutral, Jacketed Cable with Drain Wires, or Jacketed Copper Tape Shield Cable), follow the detailed instructions in the product manual for cutting, jacket removal, neutral/drain wire management, and shield preparation. If using a cold shrink sealing kit (e.g., 200ECS, 200ECS-G1, 200ECS-G2), slide the cold shrink tube onto the cable loose end first at this stage.

  3. Prepare Cable End and Install Compression Lug

Using a cable cut-back template for guidance, remove 2-1/8” (55mm) of the shield and insulation from the cable end, cutting squarely without nicking the conductor. Wire brush the bare aluminum conductors thoroughly. Immediately install the compression lug, rotating it to spread the inhibitor. Position the compression lug so its contact threaded hole aligns with the bushing bore. Crimp the lug according to the crimp chart provided with the lug, starting at the crimp line mark and rotating 180 degrees for each successive crimp. Carefully wipe any excess inhibitor from the outside of the lug and cable. Remove the insulation shield 6-7/8” (175mm) back from the lug, ensuring a straight, smooth, and squared cut. Bevel the insulation end a maximum of 1/8” (5mm). Thoroughly clean the insulation to remove all traces of dirt or excess inhibitor.

  4. Assemble the Elbow Connector

Lubricate the cable insulation and the inside of the elbow housing with the supplied lubricant. DO NOT SUBSTITUTE other lubricants, as they may be harmful to the product. Keep the insulation clean of dirt and grime. Slide the elbow connector onto the cable using a back-and-forth twisting motion. Wipe off all excess lubricant. Align the elbow with the compression lug’s threaded hole. Thread the probe into the lug by hand, ensuring it turns freely for approximately four turns before becoming snug. Tighten the probe with the supplied wrench until the wrench bends, indicating proper torque.

  5. Ground the Elbow

Insert one end of a separate copper wire (No. 14 AWG / 2.5mm or equivalent) through the grounding eye on the elbow. Twist it tightly, taking care not to damage the eye. If the elbow was preordered with a ground wire, proceed to the next step. For concentric neutral cables, twist all neutral wires together and connect them to ground using an appropriate connector, ensuring adequate slack in the wires for elbow operation. If using a cold shrink grounding kit, refer to the instructions provided with that kit to complete the grounding installation.

  6. Connect the Elbow to the Bushing

DANGER: Re-confirm that the transformer and the mating bushing are de-energized before making the connection. Lubricate the receptacle portion of the elbow connector and the mating bushing with the supplied lubricant. Securely fasten a hotstick to the loadbreak connector pulling eye. Insert the probe tip approximately 2” (50mm) into the bushing. Immediately push the elbow home with a fast, firm, straight motion, using sufficient force to engage the internal lock on the elbow connector and bushing interface. DO NOT OPERATE BY HAND.
