How to Install 261LR and 262LR Loadbreak Elbow Connectors
This guide provides step-by-step instructions for the safe installation and initial connection of 261LR (without test point) and 262LR (with test point) Loadbreak Elbow Connectors to various UD cables and 25kV class loadbreak bushings.
Estimated time: 1h 30m
Tools needed:
Hotstick, Wire brush, Crimp tool (as per lug packaging), Wire strippers
Supplies needed:
Elbow Connector Housing, Compression Lug, Probe, Probe Wrench, Lubricant (Do Not Substitute), Copper wire (No. 14 AWG / 2.5mm), Vinyl tape (if applicable), Cold shrink tube (if using sealing kit), Insulated cap (for bushing, to be removed)
- Initial Safety and Component Verification
Before starting, ensure all apparatus are de-energized. Inspect all parts for damage, correct rating, and compatibility with mating parts. Verify package contents are complete and undamaged. Check all components for proper fit with the cable and/or mating products. Test the probe by threading it into the compression lug; if resistance is encountered, check for damage and replace. Read all instructions thoroughly, have all required tools at hand, and maintain cleanliness throughout the procedure.
- Cable Training and Initial Preparation
Train the cable to ensure sufficient slack for ease of operation. Prepare neutral wires or grounding braid according to your cable type (non-jacketed, jacketed, drain wires, or copper tape shield), which may involve pulling extra cable, binding, unwrapping, removing outer jacket, or wrapping copper tape. Cut the excess cable squarely at the centerline of the bushing. If using a 200ECS or 200ECS-G sealing kit, slide the cold shrink tube onto the cable, loose end first.
- Conductor and Insulation Preparation
Remove 2-1/8” (55mm) of the shield and insulation from the cable end with a square cut, taking care not to nick the conductor. Wire brush bare aluminum conductors immediately and install the compression lug, rotating to spread inhibitor. Position the lug so its contact threaded hole aligns with the bushing bore. Crimp the lug according to the chart provided with the lug, starting at the crimp line mark and rotating 180 degrees for each successive crimp. Carefully wipe excess inhibitor from the lug and cable. Remove 6-7/8” (175mm) of the insulation shield. Bevel the insulation end a maximum of 1/8” (5mm). Thoroughly clean the insulation to remove all traces of dirt or excess inhibitor.
- Elbow Assembly
Lubricate the cable insulation and the inside of the elbow housing with the supplied lubricant. DO NOT SUBSTITUTE, as other lubricants may be harmful. Slide the elbow connector onto the cable with a back-and-forth twisting motion. Wipe off all excess lubricant. Align the elbow with the compression lug’s threaded hole. Thread the probe into the lug by hand, ensuring it turns freely for approximately four turns before becoming snug. Tighten the probe with the probe wrench until the wrench bends.
- Grounding Connection
Insert one end of a separate copper wire (No. 14 AWG / 2.5mm or equivalent) through the grounding eye on the elbow and twist tightly, taking care not to damage the eye. Twist all neutral wires together and connect them to ground using an appropriate connector. Provide adequate slack in the wires for elbow operation. If using a cold shrink grounding kit, refer to the instructions supplied with that kit to complete the grounding installation.
- Final Connection to Bushing
CONFIRM THAT TRANSFORMER AND ELBOW ARE DE-ENERGIZED before proceeding. Lubricate the receptacle portion of the elbow connector and the mating bushing with the supplied lubricant, only if known to be de-energized. Remove any insulated cap from the bushing by attaching a hotstick tool to its pulling eye. Securely fasten the hotstick to the loadbreak connector pulling eye. Confirm positive control of the elbow connector. Insert the probe tip approximately 2” (50mm) into the bushing. Immediately push the elbow home with a fast, firm, straight motion, using sufficient force to engage the internal lock on the elbow connector and bushing interface. DO NOT HOLD IN THIS PARTIALLY INSERTED POSITION.
