How to Install the Elastimold 262LR Loadbreak Elbow Connector

This guide provides step-by-step instructions for the safe installation and initial setup of the Elastimold 262LR Loadbreak Elbow Connector, including cable preparation, assembly, grounding, and voltage testing.

Estimated time: 1h 30m

Tools needed:

Probe Wrench, Crimp tool (specific to compression lug), Wire brush, Full insulated hotstick tool, Cable cutting tool, Wire strippers, Suitable sensing device (for capacitive test points)

Supplies needed:

Elbow Connector Housing, Compression Lug, Probe, Lubricant (supplied with kit, do not substitute), Copper wire (No. 14 AWG / 2.5mm or equivalent), Appropriate connector (for neutral wires), Vinyl tape (if applicable for cable type), Cold shrink tube (if using sealing kit), Conductive copper tape (if using 200ECS-G2 kit), Silicone lubricant (for test point cap)

  1. Perform Safety Checks and Pre-Installation Verification

DANGER: Ensure all apparatus is de-energized before beginning installation or removal of parts, except for test point caps and indicators. Verify all components are complete, undamaged, and compatible with the cable and mating products. Thread the probe into the compression lug by hand to check for resistance; replace damaged components if resistance is encountered. Gather all required tools and maintain cleanliness throughout the procedure.

  2. Train Cable and Prepare Neutral/Drain Wires

Train the cable to ensure adequate slack for operation. Prepare the neutral or drain wires according to the cable type (non-jacketed, jacketed concentric, or jacketed with drain wires), ensuring extra length for grounding connections. Cut the cable squarely at the centerline of the bushing. If using a cold shrink sealing kit, slide the cold shrink tube onto the cable loose end first.

  3. Prepare Conductor and Insulation

Remove 2-1/8” (55mm) of the shield and insulation from the cable end, ensuring a square cut without nicking the conductor. Wire brush bare aluminum conductors and immediately install the compression lug, rotating to spread inhibitor. Align the lug's threaded hole with the bushing bore and crimp according to the lug's chart, rotating 180 degrees for each successive crimp. Carefully wipe off excess inhibitor. Remove 6-7/8” (175mm) of the insulation shield and bevel the insulation end a maximum of 1/8” (5mm). Thoroughly clean the insulation to remove all traces of dirt or excess inhibitor.

  4. Assemble the Elbow Connector

Lubricate the cable insulation and the inside of the elbow housing with the supplied lubricant; do not substitute. Slide the elbow connector onto the cable using a back-and-forth twisting motion, then wipe off all excess lubricant. Align the elbow with the compression lug’s threaded hole. Thread the probe into the lug by hand, ensuring it turns freely for approximately four turns before becoming snug. Tighten with the probe wrench until the wrench bends.

  5. Connect Grounding Wires

Insert one end of a separate copper wire (No. 14 AWG / 2.5mm or equivalent) through the grounding eye on the elbow and twist tightly, taking care not to damage the eye. Twist all neutral wires together and connect them to ground using an appropriate connector, ensuring adequate slack for elbow operation.

  6. Connect Elbow to Bushing

CONFIRM that both the transformer and the elbow are DE-ENERGIZED before proceeding. Lubricate the receptacle portion of the elbow connector and the mating bushing with the supplied lubricant. Using a full insulated hotstick tool, securely fasten it to the loadbreak connector pulling eye. Insert the probe tip approximately 2” (50mm) into the bushing, then immediately push the elbow home with a fast, firm, straight motion to engage the internal lock.

  7. Perform Voltage Test (262LR Specific)

To test for voltage, remove the test point cap with a hotstick, peeling it off at an angle. WARNING: Use a suitable sensing device designed for capacitive test points to determine if the cable is energized. Do not use conventional voltage measuring equipment. Treat the elbow as energized until a 'no voltage' indication is confirmed by other means, as contamination or incorrect equipment can provide false readings. After testing, clean the inside surface of the cap, lubricate with silicone lubricant, and replace it on the test point.
