How to Install 261LRJS/262LRJS Loadbreak Elbow Connectors
This guide provides step-by-step instructions for installing 261LRJS and 262LRJS Loadbreak Elbow Connectors, designed for terminating UD cable with jacketed concentric neutral wires and connecting to 25kV class loadbreak bushings.
Estimated time: 1h
Tools needed:
Probe Wrench, Crimp tool, Wire brush, Cable stripping tools, Hotstick
Supplies needed:
Lubricant, Mastic sealing strips, Vinyl tape, No. 14 AWG (2.5mm) copper wire, Grounding connector
- Prepare for Installation and Inspect Components
DANGER: Ensure all apparatus is de-energized during installation or removal of parts to prevent serious or fatal injury. Inspect all package contents for completeness and damage. Verify all components, including the elbow connector, compression lug, and probe, are compatible with the cable and mating products. Thread the probe into the compression lug to check for free movement and ensure no damage. If the product was supplied with protective shipping covers, remove them and replace with appropriate HV insulated caps or connectors before submerging or energizing the circuit.
- Train the Cable
Train the cable to ensure sufficient slack for ease of operation. Pull extra cable 24-26 inches beyond the bushing centerline and place a tape mark at the centerline. Remove the outer jacket 7-3/4 to 8 inches further back from the tape mark. Unwrap the neutral wires back past the bushing centerline. Cut the excess cable squarely at the centerline of the bushing.
- Prepare the Cable End
Wrap one mastic strip, stretching slightly, around the cable jacket. Bend all neutral wires straight back over the mastic and along the cable, pressing them into the mastic. Wrap a second mastic strip completely around the outer jacket, overlapping the imbedded neutral wires. Use a third mastic strip, if needed, to build up the outer diameter in the area of the first mastic location, then cover all mastic with vinyl tape. Remove the insulation shield and insulation from the cable end, cutting squarely and taking care not to nick the conductor. Wire brush bare aluminum conductors and immediately install the compression lug, rotating it to spread inhibitor. Position the compression lug so the contact threaded hole aligns with the bushing bore. Crimp the lug according to the crimp chart, starting at the crimp line mark and rotating 180 degrees for each successive crimp. Carefully wipe off any excessive inhibitor from the outside of the lug and cable. Remove the remaining insulation shield as shown in the dimensional guide and bevel the insulation end by 1/8 inch maximum. Thoroughly clean the insulation to remove all traces of conductive residue.
- Assemble the Elbow Connector
Lubricate the cable insulation and the inside of the elbow housing with the supplied lubricant; DO NOT SUBSTITUTE, as other lubricants may be harmful. Keep insulation clean of dirt and grime. Slide the elbow connector onto the cable with a back-and-forth twisting motion. Wipe off all excess lubricant. Align the elbow with the compression lug’s threaded hole. Thread the probe into the lug by hand, taking care not to cross-thread. The probe must turn freely for approximately four turns before becoming snug. Tighten the probe with the supplied wrench until the wrench bends, indicating proper torque.
- Connect the Concentric Neutral
Insert one end of a separate No. 14 AWG (2.5mm) copper wire or equivalent through the grounding eye on the elbow. Twist tightly, taking care not to damage the eye. Pull the hood over the concentric neutral seal area on the cable by pulling the tabs and/or rolling the seal down. Twist all neutral wires together and connect them to ground using an appropriate connector, providing adequate slack in the wires for elbow operation.
- Connect the Elbow to the Bushing Plug
Lubricate the receptacle portion of the elbow connector and the mating bushing with the lubricant supplied. LUBRICATE ONLY IF THE TRANSFORMER AND ELBOW ARE KNOWN TO BE DE-ENERGIZED. Operate the connection using a full insulated “hotstick” type live-line tool; DO NOT OPERATE BY HAND. Ensure the work area is clear of obstructions and maintain positive control over the movement of the loadbreak connector during the operating sequence.
