How to Install the 262LR Loadbreak Elbow Connector

This guide provides comprehensive instructions for the safe and proper installation of the 262LR Loadbreak Elbow Connector, covering cable preparation, elbow assembly, grounding, and final connection to a de-energized bushing.

Estimated time: 1h 30m

Tools needed:

Probe Wrench, Crimp tool, Wire brush, Wire strippers, Cable preparation tools, Hotstick

Supplies needed:

Specialized Lubricant (supplied with kit), Copper wire (No. 14 AWG / 2.5mm or equivalent), Appropriate connector (for neutral wires to ground), Vinyl tape (if applicable), Conductive copper tape (if applicable), Cold shrink tube (if applicable)

  1. Prepare for Installation and Safety Check

DANGER: All apparatus must be de-energized during installation. Do not touch or move energized products. Confirm that the transformer and elbow are de-energized. Inspect all package contents for completeness and damage. Verify all components fit properly with the cable and mating products. Check probe threads by hand-threading into the compression lug; replace if resistance is encountered. Read all instructions thoroughly before proceeding.

  2. Cable Training and Initial Jacket/Shield Preparation

Train the cable to ensure adequate slack for future operation. Based on your cable type (non-jacketed, jacketed concentric neutral, jacketed with drain wires, or jacketed copper tape shield), prepare the neutral or drain wires and remove the outer jacket or copper tape shield to the specified lengths (e.g., 9-5/8" (240mm) for jacket removal, 7-1/8" (180mm) for copper tape shield removal). Cut the cable squarely at the bushing centerline. If applicable, slide any cold shrink tubes onto the cable at this stage.

  3. Conductor and Insulation Preparation

Remove 2-1/8" (55mm) of the shield and insulation from the cable end, ensuring a square cut without nicking the conductor. Wire brush bare aluminum conductors immediately. Install the compression lug, rotating it to spread inhibitor, and position it so the contact threaded hole aligns with the bushing bore. Crimp the lug according to the manufacturer's chart, rotating 180 degrees for each successive crimp. Carefully wipe off any excess inhibitor. Remove 6-7/8" (175mm) of the insulation shield and bevel the insulation end by a maximum of 1/8" (5mm). Thoroughly clean the insulation to remove all dirt or inhibitor traces.

  4. Assemble the Elbow Connector

Lubricate the cable insulation and the inside of the elbow housing with the specialized lubricant provided; do not substitute. Slide the elbow connector onto the cable using a back-and-forth twisting motion, then wipe off any excess lubricant. Align the elbow with the compression lug's threaded hole. Thread the probe into the lug by hand, ensuring it turns freely for approximately four turns before becoming snug. Tighten the probe with the supplied wrench until the wrench bends, indicating proper torque.

  5. Establish Ground Connections

Insert one end of a separate copper wire (No. 14 AWG / 2.5mm or equivalent) through the grounding eye on the elbow and twist it tightly, being careful not to damage the eye. Twist all neutral wires together and connect them to ground using an appropriate connector, ensuring adequate slack for elbow operation. If using a cold shrink grounding kit, follow its specific instructions.

  6. Final Connection to Bushing

DANGER: Re-confirm that both the transformer and the elbow are de-energized before proceeding. Lubricate the receptacle portion of the elbow connector and the mating bushing with the supplied lubricant. Securely fasten a hotstick to the loadbreak connector pulling eye. Insert the probe tip approximately 2" (50mm) into the bushing, then immediately push the elbow home with a fast, firm, straight motion, using sufficient force to engage the internal lock on the elbow connector and bushing interface.
