How to Install the 262LR Loadbreak Elbow Connector

This guide provides step-by-step instructions for preparing the cable, assembling the 262LR Loadbreak Elbow Connector, and making the initial connection to a de-energized bushing.

Estimated time: 1h 30m

Tools needed:

Probe wrench, Crimp tool (specific to lug), Wire brush, Cable cutting tool, Wire strippers, Hotstick

Supplies needed:

262LR Elbow Connector Kit (Housing, Compression Lug, Probe, Lubricant), No. 14 AWG (2.5mm) copper wire, Neutral wire connector, Cold shrink tube (if applicable)

  1. Perform Initial Safety Checks and Component Verification

DANGER: All apparatus must be de-energized during installation or removal of part(s) to prevent serious or fatal injury. Before beginning, inspect all components from the 262LR kit for any damage, verify their ratings, and confirm compatibility with the mating bushing and cable. Check the package contents against the list provided. Thread the probe into the compression lug by hand to ensure it turns freely without resistance, indicating no thread damage. Gather all necessary tools and maintain a clean work area throughout the installation.

  2. Prepare the Cable and Install the Compression Lug

Train the cable to ensure sufficient slack for future operation. For jacketed concentric neutral cable, pull 24-26 inches (610-660mm) of extra cable beyond the bushing centerline and mark it. Remove 9-5/8 inches (240mm) of the outer jacket from this mark, then unwrap the neutral wires past the bushing centerline. Cut the cable end squarely at the bushing centerline. Remove 2-1/8 inches (55mm) of the insulation shield and primary insulation from the cable end, taking care not to nick the conductor. Wire brush the bare aluminum conductor and immediately install the compression lug, rotating it to spread the inhibitor. Align the lug's threaded hole with the bushing bore. Crimp the lug using the recommended tool and chart, starting at the crimp line and rotating 180 degrees for each successive crimp. Wipe off any excess inhibitor. Finally, remove 6-7/8 inches (175mm) of the remaining insulation shield and bevel the primary insulation end a maximum of 1/8 inch (5mm). Thoroughly clean the insulation surface.

  3. Assemble the Elbow and Install the Probe

Lubricate the cable insulation and the inside of the elbow housing with the supplied lubricant. DO NOT SUBSTITUTE other lubricants, as they may harm the product. Slide the elbow connector onto the cable using a back-and-forth twisting motion until it is fully seated. Wipe off any excess lubricant. Align the elbow's operating eye with the compression lug's threaded hole. Thread the probe into the lug by hand, ensuring it turns freely for approximately four turns before becoming snug. Tighten the probe with the supplied wrench until the wrench bends, indicating proper torque.

  4. Make Grounding Connections

Insert one end of a separate No. 14 AWG (2.5mm) copper wire or equivalent through the grounding eye on the elbow. Twist the wire tightly, taking care not to damage the eye. Twist all concentric neutral wires together and connect them to ground using an appropriate connector, ensuring adequate slack in the wires for elbow operation. If using a cold shrink grounding kit, refer to its specific instructions for completion.

  5. Connect the Elbow to the Bushing

DANGER: CONFIRM THAT THE TRANSFORMER AND ELBOW ARE DE-ENERGIZED before proceeding with the connection. Do not operate by hand. Lubricate the receptacle portion of the elbow connector and the mating bushing with the supplied lubricant. Securely fasten a full insulated 'hotstick' type live-line tool to the loadbreak connector pulling eye. Confirm positive control of the elbow connector. Insert the probe tip approximately 2 inches (50mm) into the bushing, then immediately push the elbow home with a fast, firm, straight motion, using sufficient force to engage the internal lock on the elbow connector and bushing interface.
