How to Install the 262LR Loadbreak Elbow Connector

This guide provides step-by-step instructions for the safe installation and initial setup of the 262LR Loadbreak Elbow Connector, designed to terminate various UD cables and connect to 25kV class loadbreak bushings or accessory devices.

Estimated time: 1h 30m

Tools needed:

Probe wrench, Wire strippers, Crimp tool, Wire brush, Utility knife, Hotstick

Supplies needed:

Elbow Connector Housing, Compression Lug, Probe, Lubricant (supplied, Do Not Substitute), UD Cable, No. 14 AWG (2.5mm) copper wire, Appropriate connector for neutral wires, Cleaning solvent/wipes

  1. Perform Pre-Installation Checks and Ensure Safety

Before beginning, ensure all apparatus are de-energized. This product must be installed only by competent personnel trained in high voltage electrical equipment safety. Inspect all package contents for completeness and damage. Verify all components fit properly with the cable and mating products. Check the probe threads by hand-threading it into the compression lug; replace if resistance is encountered. Have all required tools ready and maintain cleanliness throughout the procedure.

  2. Train and Prepare the Cable

Train the cable to provide sufficient slack for operation. Based on your cable type (concentric neutral, jacketed, or tape shield), follow the specific instructions to remove the outer jacket or shield and cut the cable squarely at the bushing centerline. Ensure adequate length of neutral or drain wires remains for grounding connections.

  3. Prepare the Cable End

Remove 2-1/8 inches (55mm) of shield and insulation from the cable end, cutting squarely without nicking the conductor. Wire brush bare aluminum conductors and immediately install the compression lug, rotating it to spread inhibitor. Align the lug's threaded hole with the bushing bore. Crimp the lug according to the manufacturer's chart, rotating 180 degrees for each successive crimp. Carefully wipe off any excess inhibitor. Remove the insulation shield as shown in the template, and bevel the insulation end by a maximum of 1/8 inch (5mm). Thoroughly clean the insulation to remove all dirt or inhibitor traces.

  4. Assemble the Elbow Connector

Lubricate the cable insulation and the inside of the elbow housing with the supplied lubricant; do not substitute. Slide the elbow connector onto the cable using a back-and-forth twisting motion, then wipe off all excess lubricant. Align the elbow with the compression lug's threaded hole. Hand-thread the probe into the lug, ensuring it turns freely for approximately four turns before becoming snug. Tighten the probe with the supplied wrench until the wrench bends.

  5. Connect Grounding Wires

Insert one end of a separate No. 14 AWG (2.5mm) copper wire or equivalent through the grounding eye on the elbow and twist it tightly. Twist all concentric neutral wires together and connect them to ground using an appropriate connector, ensuring adequate slack for elbow operation. If using a cold shrink grounding kit, refer to its specific instructions.

  6. Connect Elbow to Bushing Plug

CONFIRM THAT THE TRANSFORMER AND ELBOW ARE DE-ENERGIZED. Lubricate the receptacle portion of the elbow connector and the mating bushing with the supplied lubricant. Operate the elbow using a full insulated hotstick type tool, following loadmake operation instructions, to securely connect it to the bushing. DO NOT OPERATE BY HAND.
