How to Install 261LRJS and 262LRJS Loadbreak Elbow Connectors
This guide provides step-by-step instructions for the safe and proper installation of Elastimold 261LRJS and 262LRJS Loadbreak Elbow Connectors, including cable preparation, elbow assembly, and connection to a 25kV class loadbreak bushing or accessory device. Installation must be performed by competent personnel trained in high voltage electrical equipment safety.
Estimated time: 1h 30m
Tools needed:
Probe Wrench, Wire brush, Crimp tool (specific to compression lug), Hotstick (for energized operations and test point caps), Cable cut back template
Supplies needed:
Elbow Connector Housing, Compression Lug, Probe, Lubricant (supplied, do not substitute), Sealing Strips (3), Mastic strips, Vinyl tape, Copper wire (No. 14 AWG / 2.5mm) or equivalent, Appropriate connector (for neutral to ground), UD cable with jacketed concentric neutral wires and extruded insulation shielding, HV insulated cap(s) or connector(s) (if shipping covers are present)
- De-energize and Inspect Components
DANGER: All apparatus must be de-energized during installation or removal of parts, except for test point caps and indicators. Check the contents of the package to ensure all components are complete and undamaged. Inspect all parts for proper fit with the cable and/or mating products. If supplied with protective shipping covers, remove them and replace with appropriate HV insulated caps or connectors before submerging or energizing the circuit.
- Prepare Cable for Training
Train the cable to ensure sufficient slack for ease of operation. Pull extra cable 24-26 inches beyond the centerline of the bushing. Place a tape mark at the bushing centerline. Remove the outer jacket 7-3/4 to 8 inches further back from the tape mark. Unwrap the neutral wires back past the bushing centerline and cut the excess cable squarely at the bushing centerline.
- Apply Mastic and Embed Neutral Wires
Wrap one strip of mastic, stretching slightly, around the cable jacket. Bend all neutral wires straight back over the mastic and along the cable, pressing them firmly into the mastic. Wrap a second strip of mastic completely around the outer jacket, overlapping the embedded neutral wires. Use a third strip of mastic if needed to build up the outer diameter. Cover all mastic with vinyl tape.
- Prepare Cable End for Lug Installation
Using a cable cut-back template for dimensional guidance, remove the insulation shield and insulation from the cable end. Cut squarely, taking extreme care not to nick the conductor or insulation. Bevel the insulation end a maximum of 1/8 inch.
- Install Compression Lug
Wire brush bare aluminum conductors immediately before installation. Install the compression lug, rotating it to spread the inhibitor. Position the compression lug so the contact threaded hole aligns with the bushing bore. Refer to the crimp chart packaged with the compression lug for recommended crimp tool information. Start crimping at the crimp line mark, rotating 180 degrees for each successive crimp. Carefully wipe any excessive inhibitor from the outside of the lug and cable.
- Clean Insulation
Thoroughly clean the insulation to remove all traces of conductive residue, ensuring a straight, smooth, and squared surface. Do not cut or nick the insulation during this process.
- Lubricate and Assemble Elbow Housing
Lubricate the cable insulation and the inside of the elbow housing with the supplied lubricant. DO NOT SUBSTITUTE other lubricants, as they may be harmful. Keep the insulation clean of dirt and grime. Slide the elbow connector onto the cable using a back-and-forth twisting motion. Wipe off all excess lubricant.
- Install and Tighten Probe
Align the elbow with the compression lug's threaded hole. Thread the probe into the lug by hand, taking care not to cross-thread. The probe should turn freely for approximately four turns before becoming snug. Tighten the probe with the probe wrench until the wrench bends, indicating proper torque.
- Connect Concentric Neutral Wires
Insert one end of a separate copper wire (No. 14 AWG / 2.5mm) or equivalent through the grounding eye on the elbow. Twist it tightly, ensuring not to damage the eye. Pull the hood over the concentric neutral seal area on the cable by pulling the tabs and/or rolling the seal down. Twist all neutral wires together and connect them to ground using an appropriate connector, providing adequate slack for elbow operation.
- Connect Elbow to Mating Bushing
Lubricate the receptacle portion of the elbow connector and the mating bushing with the supplied lubricant ONLY IF THE TRANSFORMER AND ELBOW ARE KNOWN TO BE DE-ENERGIZED. Securely fasten a hotstick to the loadbreak connector pulling eye. Confirm positive control of the elbow connector. Insert the probe tip approximately 2 inches (50mm) into the bushing, then immediately push the elbow home with a fast, firm, straight motion, using sufficient force to engage the internal lock on the elbow connector and bushing interface. DO NOT OPERATE BY HAND.
- Perform Voltage Test (262LRJS Only)
For 262LRJS models, remove the test point cap with a hotstick, peeling it off at an angle. WARNING: The voltage test point is a capacitance device; do not use conventional voltage measuring equipment. Follow the manufacturer's directions for a suitable sensing device to determine if the cable is energized. Treat the elbow as energized until the 'no voltage' indication is confirmed by other means. After testing, clean and lubricate the inside surface of the cap with silicone lubricant and replace it on the test point.
