How to Install Elastimold 261LR/262LR Loadbreak Elbow Connectors

This guide provides detailed instructions for the safe installation and initial preparation of Elastimold 261LR and 262LR Loadbreak Elbow Connectors, designed for terminating UD cables and connecting to 25kV class loadbreak bushings.

Estimated time: 1h 30m

Tools needed:

Probe Wrench, Crimp tool (specific to compression lug), Wire brush, Cable cutting tool, Cable stripping tool, Hotstick, Suitable voltage sensing device (for capacitive test point)

Supplies needed:

Elbow Connector Housing (261LR or 262LR), Compression Lug, Probe, Lubricant (supplied, do not substitute), Copper wire (No. 14 AWG / 2.5mm or equivalent), Appropriate connector for neutral wires, Vinyl tape (if using jacketed cable with drain wires), Cold shrink tube (if using 200ECS, 200ECS-G1, or 200ECS-G2 sealing kits), Conductive copper tape (if using 200ECS-G2 kit), Silicone lubricant (for test point cap, if applicable)

  1. De-energize and Prepare Cable

DANGER: Ensure all apparatus is de-energized before beginning installation to prevent serious or fatal injury. Inspect all components for damage and compatibility. Train the cable to ensure adequate slack for operation. Depending on cable type (non-jacketed, jacketed concentric neutral, jacketed with drain wires, or jacketed copper tape shield), prepare the cable by cutting it squarely at the bushing centerline and removing the outer jacket and/or copper tape shield to the specified dimensions (e.g., 9-5/8 inches for jacketed cables). If using a cold shrink sealing kit, slide the cold shrink tube onto the cable loose end first.

  2. Prepare Cable End and Install Compression Lug

Remove the insulation shield and insulation 2-1/8 inches (55mm) from the cable end, ensuring a square cut without nicking the conductor. Wire brush bare aluminum conductors immediately and install the compression lug. Rotate the lug to spread the inhibitor. Position the compression lug so its contact threaded hole aligns with the bushing bore. Crimp the lug according to the manufacturer's chart, starting at the crimp line mark and rotating 180 degrees for each successive crimp. Carefully wipe excess inhibitor from the lug and cable. Remove the insulation shield as shown in the template, beveling the insulation end 1/8 inch (5mm) maximum. Thoroughly clean the insulation.

  3. Assemble Elbow Connector

Lubricate the cable insulation and the inside of the elbow housing with the supplied lubricant; do not substitute. Slide the elbow connector onto the cable using a back-and-forth twisting motion, then wipe off all excess lubricant. Align the elbow with the compression lug's threaded hole. Thread the probe into the lug by hand, ensuring it turns freely for approximately four turns before becoming snug. Tighten the probe with the supplied wrench until the wrench bends, indicating proper torque.

  4. Ground the Elbow Connector

Insert one end of a separate copper wire (No. 14 AWG / 2.5mm or equivalent) through the grounding eye on the elbow and twist tightly, taking care not to damage the eye. Twist all neutral wires together and connect them to ground using an appropriate connector, ensuring adequate slack for elbow operation. If using a cold shrink grounding kit, refer to its specific instructions.

  5. Connect Elbow to Bushing Plug

CONFIRM THAT THE TRANSFORMER AND ELBOW ARE DE-ENERGIZED. Lubricate the receptacle portion of the elbow connector and the mating bushing with the supplied lubricant. Securely fasten a hotstick to the loadbreak connector pulling eye. Insert the probe tip approximately 2 inches (50mm) into the bushing, then immediately push the elbow home with a fast, firm, straight motion, using sufficient force to engage the internal lock on the elbow connector and bushing interface. DO NOT OPERATE BY HAND.
