How to Install Elastimold 261LR/262LR Loadbreak Elbow Connectors
This guide provides step-by-step instructions for the safe installation and initial setup of Elastimold 261LR and 262LR Loadbreak Elbow Connectors on various UD cables. It covers cable preparation, connector assembly, and grounding procedures.
Estimated time: 1h 30m
Tools needed:
Wire strippers/Cable knife, Wire brush, Crimp tool (specific to lug), Probe wrench, Vinyl tape
Supplies needed:
Elastimold 261LR or 262LR Elbow Connector Kit (includes housing, compression lug, probe, lubricant), UD Cable (appropriate type and size), Copper wire (No. 14 AWG / 2.5mm or equivalent), Grounding connector (for neutral/ground wires), Cold shrink sealing kit (e.g., 200ECS, if applicable), Conductive copper tape (if using 200ECS-G2 kit)
- Ensure Safety and Prepare Cable for Training
DANGER: All apparatus must be de-energized during installation or removal of parts. Failure to follow this instruction will result in serious or fatal injury. Inspect all parts for damage, rating, and compatibility with mating parts. Train the UD cable to ensure adequate slack for ease of operation. Depending on your cable type (non-jacketed, jacketed concentric neutral, jacketed with drain wires, or jacketed copper tape shield), prepare the neutral or ground wires by pulling extra length (24-26 inches beyond bushing centerline) or removing the outer jacket (9-5/8 inches back from tape mark/bushing centerline). Cut the excess cable squarely at the centerline of the bushing. If using a cold shrink sealing kit, slide the cold shrink tube onto the cable loose end first at this stage.
- Prepare Cable End and Install Compression Lug
Remove the cable shield and insulation 2-1/8 inches (55mm) from the cable end, ensuring a square cut without nicking the conductor. Wire brush the bare aluminum conductors thoroughly. Immediately install the compression lug onto the conductor, rotating it to spread the inhibitor. Position the compression lug so its contact threaded hole aligns with the bushing bore. Refer to the crimp chart provided with the compression lug for recommended crimp tool information. Start crimping at the crimp line mark and rotate 180 degrees for each successive crimp. Carefully wipe any excess inhibitor from the outside of the lug and cable. Remove the insulation shield 6-7/8 inches (175mm) from the cable end, ensuring a straight, smooth, and squared cut without cutting or nicking the insulation. Bevel the insulation end a maximum of 1/8 inch (5mm). Thoroughly clean the insulation to remove all traces of dirt or excess inhibitor.
- Assemble Elbow Connector
Lubricate the cable insulation and the inside of the elbow housing with the lubricant supplied in the kit. DO NOT SUBSTITUTE other lubricants, as they may be harmful to the product. Maintain cleanliness of the insulation. Slide the elbow connector onto the cable using a back-and-forth twisting motion until it is fully seated. Wipe off all excess lubricant. Align the elbow with the compression lug’s threaded hole. Thread the probe into the lug by hand, taking care not to cross-thread. The probe should turn freely for approximately four turns before becoming snug. Tighten the probe with the supplied wrench until the wrench bends, indicating proper torque.
- Ground the Elbow Connector
Insert one end of a separate copper wire (No. 14 AWG / 2.5mm or equivalent) through the grounding eye on the elbow. Twist the wire tightly, taking care not to damage the eye. Twist all neutral wires together and connect them to ground using an appropriate connector. Ensure adequate slack in the wires to allow for elbow operation. If using a cold shrink grounding kit, refer to the specific instructions supplied with that kit to complete the grounding installation.
- Prepare for Connection to Bushing Plug
CONFIRM THAT THE TRANSFORMER AND ELBOW ARE DE-ENERGIZED before proceeding. Lubricate the receptacle portion of the elbow connector and the mating bushing with the lubricant supplied in the kit. The elbow is now ready for connection to the bushing plug. Note: Loadmake and Loadbreak operations must be performed with a full insulated 'hotstick' type tool and not by hand. Consult your company’s safe work practices for required tool length and operating procedures.
