How to Install Elastimold 261LR/262LR Loadbreak Elbow Connectors

These instructions guide competent personnel through the safe installation and assembly of Elastimold 261LR and 262LR Loadbreak Elbow Connectors, including cable preparation, elbow assembly, and grounding.

Estimated time: 1h 30m

Tools needed:

Wire strippers, Wire brush, Crimp tool, Probe wrench, Hotstick (for handling)

Supplies needed:

Elbow Connector Housing, Compression Lug, Probe, Lubricant (Do Not Substitute), Copper wire (No. 14 AWG / 2.5mm or equivalent), Appropriate connector (for neutral wires)

  1. De-energize Apparatus and Inspect Components

DANGER: Ensure all apparatus is de-energized before beginning installation. Inspect all components of the 261LR/262LR kit for any damage, verify ratings, and confirm compatibility with mating parts. Thread the probe into the compression lug by hand to check for smooth movement; if resistance is encountered, replace the damaged component. Read the entire instructions and gather all required tools.

  2. Prepare the Cable

Prepare the cable according to its type (non-jacketed, jacketed concentric neutral, jacketed with drain wires, or jacketed copper tape shield). Train the cable to ensure sufficient slack for future operation. Follow the specific instructions in the documentation for removing the outer jacket, unwrapping/binding neutral or drain wires, and applying any necessary sealing kits or conductive tape. Cut the cable squarely at the bushing centerline as specified.

  3. Detailed Cable End Preparation and Lug Installation

Using a cable cut-back template, remove 2-1/8 inches (55mm) of shield and insulation from the cable end, ensuring a square cut without nicking the conductor. Wire brush bare aluminum conductors immediately. Install the compression lug, rotating it to spread the inhibitor, and align its threaded hole with the bushing bore. Crimp the lug according to the crimp chart, rotating 180 degrees for each successive crimp. Carefully wipe off any excess inhibitor. Remove 6-7/8 inches (175mm) of the insulation shield, beveling the insulation end by a maximum of 1/8 inch (5mm). Thoroughly clean the insulation to remove all dirt and inhibitor.

  4. Assemble the Elbow Connector

Lubricate the cable insulation and the inside of the elbow housing using only the supplied lubricant; do not substitute. Slide the elbow connector onto the cable using a back-and-forth twisting motion, then wipe off any excess lubricant. Align the elbow with the compression lug's threaded hole. Thread the probe into the lug by hand, ensuring it turns freely for approximately four turns before becoming snug. Tighten the probe with the supplied wrench until the wrench bends, indicating proper torque.

  5. Ground the Elbow Connector

Insert one end of a separate copper wire (No. 14 AWG / 2.5mm or equivalent) through the grounding eye on the elbow and twist it tightly, taking care not to damage the eye. Twist all neutral wires together and connect them to ground using an appropriate connector. Ensure adequate slack is provided in the ground and neutral wires to allow for future elbow operation. If using a cold shrink grounding kit, follow its specific instructions.
