How to Install 261LR and 262LR Loadbreak Elbow Connectors

This guide provides step-by-step instructions for preparing cables, assembling, and connecting 261LR and 262LR Loadbreak Elbow Connectors to a 25kV class bushing.

Estimated time: 1h 30m

Tools needed:

Cable cutting tool, Wire strippers, Wire brush, Crimp tool, Probe wrench, Hotstick, Vinyl tape

Supplies needed:

Elbow Connector Housing, Compression Lug, Probe, Lubricant (supplied, do not substitute), Copper wire (No. 14 AWG / 2.5mm), Appropriate connector for neutral wires, Optional: Cold shrink tube (if using sealing kit)

  1. Perform Initial Safety Checks and Component Inspection

Ensure all apparatus in the work area are de-energized before beginning installation. Confirm that only competent personnel trained in high-voltage safety practices are performing this installation. Inspect all package contents for completeness and damage. Verify all components fit properly with the cable and mating products. Check the probe threads by hand-threading into the compression lug; replace if resistance is encountered.

  2. Prepare the Cable for Termination

Train the cable to ensure adequate slack for future operation. Prepare the concentric neutral wires or grounding braid wire according to the specific cable type (non-jacketed, jacketed, or drain wire). Cut the cable squarely at the bushing centerline. If using a cold shrink sealing kit, slide the cold shrink tube onto the cable loose end first.

  3. Prepare Cable End and Install Compression Lug

Remove 2-1/8 inches (55mm) of the cable shield and insulation from the cable end, ensuring a square cut without nicking the conductor. Wire brush bare aluminum conductors thoroughly. Immediately install the compression lug, rotating it to spread any inhibitor. Position the lug so its threaded hole aligns with the bushing bore. Crimp the lug according to the crimp chart, starting at the crimp line mark and rotating 180 degrees for each successive crimp. Carefully wipe off any excess inhibitor. Remove the insulation shield as shown in the diagram, and bevel the insulation end by a maximum of 1/8 inch (5mm). Thoroughly clean the insulation to remove all dirt or inhibitor.

  4. Assemble the Elbow Connector

Apply the supplied lubricant to the cable insulation and the inside of the elbow housing. DO NOT SUBSTITUTE with other lubricants. Slide the elbow connector onto the cable using a back-and-forth twisting motion, then wipe off any excess lubricant. Align the elbow with the compression lug's threaded hole. Thread the probe into the lug by hand, ensuring it turns freely for approximately four turns before becoming snug. Tighten the probe with the supplied probe wrench until the wrench bends.

  5. Connect Grounding and Neutral Wires

Insert one end of a separate No. 14 AWG (2.5mm) copper wire or equivalent through the grounding eye on the elbow and twist it tightly, taking care not to damage the eye. Twist all neutral wires together and connect them to ground using an appropriate connector. Ensure adequate slack in the wires for elbow operation. If using a cold shrink grounding kit, refer to its specific instructions.

  6. Connect Elbow to Bushing

CONFIRM THAT BOTH THE TRANSFORMER AND THE ELBOW ARE DE-ENERGIZED before proceeding. Lubricate the receptacle portion of the elbow connector and the mating bushing with the supplied lubricant. Using a full insulated hotstick type tool, securely fasten it to the loadbreak connector pulling eye. Carefully insert the probe tip approximately 2 inches (50mm) into the bushing, then immediately push the elbow home with a fast, firm, straight motion to fully engage the internal lock.
