How to Install 261LRJS/262LRJS Loadbreak Elbow Connectors
This guide provides step-by-step instructions for the safe installation and assembly of 261LRJS and 262LRJS Loadbreak Elbow Connectors with jacket seals on UD cable, including cable preparation and neutral connection.
Estimated time: 1h 30m
Tools needed:
Probe wrench, Cable cut back template, Wire brush, Crimp tool, Wire strippers, Utility knife
Supplies needed:
Elbow connector housing, Compression lug, Probe, Lubricant (supplied), 3 sealing strips (mastic), Vinyl tape, Copper wire (No. 14 AWG / 2.5mm or equivalent), Appropriate ground connector
- Perform Initial Safety Checks and Component Verification
DANGER: All apparatus must be de-energized during installation. This product should only be installed by competent personnel trained in high voltage electrical equipment safety. Failure to follow instructions will result in serious injury or death. Check all package contents for completeness and damage. Verify all components fit properly with the cable and mating products. Thread the probe into the compression lug to check for resistance; if encountered, inspect for damage and replace components. Ensure all required tools are at hand and maintain cleanliness. If installing a 262LRJS, lubricate and install the test point cap if not already present.
- Train and Prepare Cable Jacket and Neutral Wires
Train the cable to ensure sufficient slack for ease of operation. Pull extra cable 24-26 inches beyond the bushing centerline, then mark and remove the outer jacket 7-3/4 to 8 inches further back from the tape mark. Unwrap the neutral wires back past the bushing centerline. Cut the excess cable squarely at the bushing centerline. Wrap one mastic strip, stretching slightly, around the jacket. Bend all neutral wires straight back over the mastic and along the cable, pressing them into the mastic. Wrap a second mastic strip completely around the outer jacket, overlapping the imbedded neutral wires. Use a third strip if needed to build up the outer diameter. Cover all mastic with vinyl tape.
- Prepare Cable Insulation and Conductor
Remove the insulation shield and insulation from the cable end, cutting squarely and taking care not to nick the conductor. Wire brush bare aluminum conductors and immediately install the compression lug, rotating to spread inhibitor. Position the lug so the contact threaded hole aligns with the bushing bore. Crimp according to the chart provided with the lug, rotating 180 degrees for each successive crimp. Carefully wipe excessive inhibitor from the outside of the lug and cable. Remove the insulation shield as shown in the diagram, and bevel the insulation end a maximum of 1/8 inch. Thoroughly clean the insulation to remove all traces of conductive residue.
- Assemble the Elbow Connector
Lubricate the cable insulation and the inside of the elbow housing with the supplied lubricant. DO NOT SUBSTITUTE other lubricants, as they may be harmful. Keep the insulation clean. Slide the elbow connector onto the cable using a back-and-forth twisting motion. Wipe off all excess lubricant. Align the elbow with the compression lug's threaded hole. Thread the probe into the lug by hand, ensuring it turns freely for approximately four turns before becoming snug. Tighten the probe with the probe wrench until the wrench bends, indicating proper torque.
- Connect the Concentric Neutral
Insert one end of a separate copper wire (No. 14 AWG / 2.5mm or equivalent) through the grounding eye on the elbow. Twist the wire tightly, taking care not to damage the eye. Pull the hood over the concentric neutral seal area on the cable by pulling the tabs or rolling the seal down. Twist all neutral wires together and connect them to ground using an appropriate connector. Ensure adequate slack in the wires for future elbow operation.
- Connect the Elbow to the Mating Bushing
Lubricate the receptacle portion of the elbow connector and the mating bushing with the supplied lubricant. WARNING: LUBRICATE ONLY IF THE TRANSFORMER AND ELBOW ARE KNOWN TO BE DE-ENERGIZED. Securely fasten a hotstick to the loadbreak connector pulling eye. Confirm positive control of the elbow connector. Insert the probe tip approximately 2 inches (50mm) into the bushing. Immediately push the elbow home with a fast, firm, straight motion, using sufficient force to engage the internal lock on the elbow connector and bushing interface. DO NOT OPERATE BY HAND.
