How to Install the 252LR Deadbreak Elbow Connector

This guide provides step-by-step instructions for the safe and proper installation of the Elastimold 252LR Deadbreak Elbow Connector, designed for terminating UD cable with concentric neutral and semi-con shielding to 25kV class deadbreak bushings.

Estimated time: 1h

Tools needed:

Wrench, Crimp tool, Wire brush, Hot stick, Wire strippers, Cable cut back template

Supplies needed:

252LR Elbow Connector Housing, Compression Lug, Probe, Probe Contact, Lubricant (supplied), Hold-down Bail, UD cable (concentric neutral and semi-con shielding), No. 14 AWG / 2.5mm copper wire, Appropriate connector (for neutral to ground), HV insulated cap(s) or connector(s) (if needed)

  1. Perform Initial Safety Checks and Inspections

DANGER: Ensure all apparatus is de-energized before starting installation. Verify the work area is safe and free from energized products. Confirm all package contents are complete and undamaged. Inspect the elbow housing cable entrance size and compression lug size for proper fit with the cable. Check the probe threads by hand-threading into the compression lug; replace damaged components if resistance is met. Inspect all parts for damage, correct rating, and compatibility with mating parts. If the test point cap is not installed, lubricate the cap and test point, then install the cap. If the product came with shipping covers, remove them and replace with appropriate HV insulated caps or connectors.

  2. Train the Cable

Train the UD cable as shown in the diagram to ease operation, ensuring a minimum of 20 inches (508.0mm) beyond the end of the cable pad mount transformer. Cut any excess cable squarely at the center line of the bushing.

  3. Prepare the Cable

Unwrap and bind the concentric neutral wires 8-1/2 inches (216.0mm) back from the end of the cable. Remove the shield and insulation from the cable end, cutting squarely and taking care not to nick the conductor. Wire brush the bare aluminum conductors and immediately install the compression lug. Rotate the lug to spread the inhibitor. Position the compression lug so its contact threaded hole aligns with the bushing bore. Crimp the lug starting at the crimp line mark, rotating 180 degrees for each successive crimp. Carefully wipe any excessive inhibitor from the outside of the lug and cable. Remove the semi-con shield as shown in the template. Bevel the insulation end a maximum of 1/8 inch (3.2mm). Thoroughly clean the insulation to remove all traces of conductive residue.

  4. Assemble the Elbow

Clean and lubricate the cable insulation and the inside of the elbow housing with the supplied lubricant. Do not use substitute lubricants. Slide the elbow connector onto the cable using a back-and-forth twisting motion. Wipe off all excess silicone lubricant. Align the elbow with the compression lug's threaded hole. Thread the probe into the lug by hand, ensuring not to cross-thread. Tighten with the supplied wrench until the wrench bends.

  5. Assemble the Hold-down Bail

Place the hold-down bail into the hold-down bracket. Compress the bail and insert it into the brackets.

  6. Connect the Concentric Neutral

Insert one end of a separate No. 14 AWG (2.5mm) copper wire through the grounding eye on the elbow. Twist it tightly, taking care not to damage the eye. Twist all neutral wires together and connect them to ground using an appropriate connector. Ensure adequate slack in the wires for elbow operation.

  7. Connect the Elbow and Bushing Plug

DANGER: Clean and lubricate the receptacle portion of the elbow connector and the mating bushing ONLY if both the transformer and elbow are known to be de-energized. Use a fully insulated hot stick to place the elbow onto the bushing. Do not operate by hand. Do not separate if energized.

  8. Secure the Elbow with the Bail

Pull the hold-down bail up over the crown or top of the elbow so that the eyebolt on the bail is directly over the operating eye. Tighten down on the elbow locator by turning the eyebolt clockwise. Adjust the nut on the eyebolt until it allows the eyebolt to seat securely in the locator, acting as a stop to prevent excessive force.
