Overview

The ABB 261LR-C5230-S is a 200 Amp, 25kV loadbreak elbow connector designed for reliable power distribution applications. This unit is engineered without a test point, simplifying installation and reducing potential points of failure in certain configurations. It accommodates cable insulation diameters ranging from 0.805 inches to 1.060 inches, providing a secure fit for a defined range of cable sizes. Key features include a bi-metal compression lug, suitable for connecting conductors of AWG compressed stranded #1 or solid 1/0 (42.41 mm²). This bi-metal construction ensures compatibility with both copper and aluminum conductors, offering installation flexibility. The connector also comes with the 200ECS jacket seal, which is integral to maintaining the integrity of the cable termination and preventing environmental ingress. This loadbreak elbow is a critical component for underground distribution systems, substations, and other medium-voltage applications where safe and efficient cable termination is paramount. Its specifications are designed to meet the requirements of standard loadbreak operations within its voltage and current ratings. The ABB 261LR-C5230-S offers a direct, specification-driven solution for utility and industrial power infrastructure.

How to Install 261LR/262LR Loadbreak Elbow Connectors

This guide provides step-by-step instructions for the safe and proper installation of 261LR and 262LR Loadbreak Elbow Connectors, including cable preparation, assembly, and grounding.

Estimated time: 1h 45m

Tools needed:

Cable stripping tools, Wire brush, Crimp tool, Probe wrench, Hotstick, Electrical tape

Supplies needed:

Elbow Connector Housing, Compression Lug, Probe, Lubricant (supplied, do not substitute), No. 14 AWG (2.5mm) Copper wire, Appropriate neutral connector, Cold shrink tube (if applicable), Conductive copper tape (if applicable)

  1. Prepare for Installation and Safety Checks

DANGER: Ensure all apparatus is de-energized before beginning installation or removal of parts. Inspect the package contents for completeness and damage. Verify all components fit properly with the cable and mating products. Check the probe threads by hand-threading it into the compression lug; if resistance is encountered prior to full assembly, check for damage and replace the component.

  2. Prepare the Cable

Train the cable to ensure adequate slack for operation. Based on your cable type (non-jacketed, jacketed concentric neutral, jacketed with drain wires, or jacketed copper tape shield), follow the specific instructions in the manual for removing the outer jacket, shield, and insulation. Cut the cable squarely, then remove 2-1/8 inches (55mm) of shield and insulation from the cable end, taking care not to nick the conductor. Wire brush bare aluminum conductors and immediately install the compression lug, rotating to spread inhibitor. Crimp the lug according to the crimp chart, starting at the crimp line mark and rotating 180 degrees for each successive crimp. Remove 6-7/8 inches (175mm) of the insulation shield and bevel the insulation end by 1/8 inch (5mm) maximum. Thoroughly clean the insulation to remove all traces of dirt or excess inhibitor.

  3. Assemble the Elbow Connector

Lubricate the cable insulation and the inside of the elbow housing with the supplied lubricant; DO NOT SUBSTITUTE. Slide the elbow connector onto the cable using a back-and-forth twisting motion, then wipe off any excess lubricant. Align the elbow with the compression lug's threaded hole. Thread the probe into the lug by hand, ensuring it turns freely for approximately four turns before becoming snug. Tighten the probe with the supplied wrench until the wrench bends.

  4. Ground the Elbow Connector

Insert one end of a separate No. 14 AWG (2.5mm) copper wire or equivalent through the grounding eye on the elbow and twist it tightly, being careful not to damage the eye. If the elbow is preordered with ground wire, proceed to the next step. Twist all neutral wires together and connect them to ground using an appropriate connector, ensuring adequate slack for elbow operation.

  5. Connect the Elbow to the Bushing

DANGER: CONFIRM THAT THE TRANSFORMER AND ELBOW ARE DE-ENERGIZED before proceeding. Lubricate the receptacle portion of the elbow connector and the mating bushing with the supplied lubricant. Securely fasten a hotstick to the loadbreak connector pulling eye. Insert the probe tip approximately 2 inches (50mm) into the bushing, then immediately push the elbow home with a fast, firm, straight motion to engage the internal lock on the elbow connector and bushing interface.
