How to Install 261LR and 262LR Loadbreak Elbow Connectors
This guide provides step-by-step instructions for the safe installation and initial setup of 261LR and 262LR Loadbreak Elbow Connectors, designed for terminating UD cables and connecting to 25kV class loadbreak bushings.
Estimated time: 1h 30m
Tools needed:
Probe Wrench, Crimp tool, Wire brush, Cable preparation tools, Hotstick, Vinyl tape
Supplies needed:
Elbow Connector Housing (261LR or 262LR), Compression Lug, Probe, Lubricant (supplied, do not substitute), Copper ground wire (No. 14 AWG / 2.5mm or equivalent), Appropriate connector for neutral wires, Cold shrink tube (if using sealing kit), Conductive copper tape (if using 200ECS-G2 kit)
- Perform Initial Safety Checks and Component Inspection
Before starting, ensure all apparatus in the work area are de-energized. This product must be installed only by competent personnel trained in good safety practices involving high voltage electrical equipment. Inspect all package contents and components for completeness, damage, and compatibility with the cable and mating products. Verify the probe threads freely into the compression lug for approximately four turns before becoming snug.
- Prepare the Cable for Termination
Train the cable to ensure adequate slack for operation. Prepare the cable according to its type (non-jacketed, jacketed concentric neutral, jacketed with drain wires, or jacketed copper tape shield) by managing neutral/drain wires, removing the outer jacket and/or copper tape shield to specified dimensions. Cut the cable end squarely. Then, remove 2-1/8” (55mm) of shield and insulation from the cable end, ensuring no nicks to the conductor. Bevel the insulation end 1/8” (5mm) maximum.
- Install and Crimp the Compression Lug
Thoroughly wire brush the bare aluminum conductors. Immediately install the compression lug, rotating it to spread inhibitor. Position the lug so its contact threaded hole aligns with the bushing bore. Crimp the lug according to the crimp chart supplied with the lug, starting at the crimp line mark and rotating 180 degrees for each successive crimp. Carefully wipe any excess inhibitor from the lug and cable.
- Assemble the Elbow Connector Housing
Lubricate the cable insulation and the inside of the elbow housing with the supplied lubricant; do not substitute. Slide the elbow connector onto the cable using a back-and-forth twisting motion. Wipe off all excess lubricant. Align the elbow with the compression lug’s threaded hole. Thread the probe into the lug by hand, ensuring it turns freely for approximately four turns before becoming snug. Tighten the probe with the supplied wrench until the wrench bends.
- Complete Grounding Connections
Insert one end of a separate copper wire (No. 14 AWG / 2.5mm or equivalent) through the grounding eye on the elbow and twist tightly, taking care not to damage the eye. Twist all neutral wires together and connect them to ground using an appropriate connector, ensuring adequate slack in the wires for elbow operation. If using a cold shrink grounding kit, refer to its specific instructions.
- Connect the Elbow to the Bushing
CONFIRM THAT THE TRANSFORMER AND ELBOW ARE DE-ENERGIZED. Lubricate the receptacle portion of the elbow connector and the mating bushing with the supplied lubricant. Using a full insulated hotstick tool, securely fasten it to the loadbreak connector pulling eye. Insert the probe tip approximately 2 inches (50mm) into the bushing, then immediately push the elbow home with a fast, firm, straight motion to engage the internal lock.
