Overview

The ABB 261LR-B5240 Loadbreak Elbow Connector is a 25/28kV, 200A-rated termination designed for medium-voltage underground distribution systems. This elbow connector accommodates cable insulation diameters from 0.635 to 0.905 inches and supports 1/0 AWG stranded copper or aluminum conductors, making it compatible with standard utility-grade cables. The bi-metal compression lug ensures reliable electrical continuity between copper and aluminum conductors, reducing corrosion risk and maintaining low contact resistance over time. This loadbreak elbow connector is part of ABB’s 261LR series, optimized for safe, hot-stick operable connections in pad-mounted transformers, switchgear, and underground residential or commercial distribution networks. The loadbreak design allows for energized disconnection under load, minimizing downtime during maintenance or reconfiguration. The connector’s molded EPDM rubber housing provides dielectric strength and environmental protection against moisture, ozone, and UV exposure. Key applications include: - Underground residential distribution (URD) systems - Pad-mounted transformers and switchgear terminations - Secondary and primary cable splices in vaults or direct-buried installations - Temporary or permanent loadbreak connections in utility networks The 261LR-B5240 meets industry standards for medium-voltage connectors, including IEEE 386 and ANSI C119.4, ensuring compliance with utility and regulatory requirements. Its compact design and loadbreak capability make it ideal for space-constrained installations where operational safety and reliability are critical. For installations requiring frequent loadbreak operations, this connector reduces arc hazards and simplifies maintenance workflows.

How to Install Elastimold 261LR/262LR Loadbreak Elbow Connectors

This guide provides step-by-step instructions for the safe installation and initial setup of Elastimold 261LR and 262LR Loadbreak Elbow Connectors on various UD cables. It covers cable preparation, assembly, grounding, and connection to a de-energized bushing.

Estimated time: 1h 30m

Tools needed:

Wire strippers, Utility knife, Wire brush, Crimp tool, Probe wrench, Hotstick

Supplies needed:

Elbow Connector Housing, Compression Lug, Probe, Lubricant (supplied, do not substitute), Jumper or braid (for neutral connection, if needed), Vinyl tape (if using jacketed cable with drain wires), Conductive copper tape (if using jacketed copper tape shield cable, from 200ECS-G2 kit), Cold shrink tube (if using 200ECS, 200ECS-G1, or 200ECS-G2 sealing kits), Copper wire (No. 14 AWG / 2.5mm or equivalent), Appropriate connector (for neutral wires to ground)

  1. Perform Initial Safety Checks and Inspect Components

Ensure all apparatus in the work area are de-energized before beginning installation. Confirm that the transformer and elbow are de-energized before connecting. Inspect all package contents for completeness and damage. Verify all components fit properly with the cable and mating products. Check the probe threads by hand-threading the probe into the compression lug; replace if resistance is encountered prior to full assembly.

  2. Prepare the Cable for Termination

Train the cable to ensure adequate slack for future operation. Follow the specific instructions in the product documentation (IS-1380, Step 1) for your cable type (non-jacketed concentric neutral, jacketed concentric neutral, jacketed with drain wires, or jacketed copper tape shield) to prepare the outer jacket, shield, and neutral/drain wires. This includes cutting the cable squarely, removing specified lengths of outer jacket and shield, and managing neutral or drain wires as required.

  3. Prepare the Cable End and Install Compression Lug

Remove 2-1/8 inches (55mm) of the shield and insulation from the cable end, ensuring a square cut without nicking the conductor. Wire brush any bare aluminum conductors immediately. Install the compression lug, rotating it to spread the inhibitor, and align its threaded hole with the bushing bore. Crimp the lug according to the crimp chart provided with the lug, starting at the crimp line mark and rotating 180 degrees for each successive crimp. Carefully wipe off any excess inhibitor from the lug and cable. Remove 6-7/8 inches (175mm) of the insulation shield. Bevel the insulation end a maximum of 1/8 inch (5mm). Thoroughly clean the insulation to remove all dirt or inhibitor traces.

  4. Assemble the Elbow Connector

Lubricate the cable insulation and the inside of the elbow housing using only the supplied lubricant; do not substitute. Slide the elbow connector onto the cable with a back-and-forth twisting motion, then wipe off all excess lubricant. Align the elbow with the compression lug's threaded hole. Thread the probe into the lug by hand, ensuring it turns freely for approximately four turns before becoming snug. Tighten the probe with the supplied wrench until the wrench bends.

  5. Connect Grounding Wires

Insert one end of a separate No. 14 AWG (2.5mm) copper wire or equivalent through the grounding eye on the elbow and twist it tightly, taking care not to damage the eye. If the elbow was preordered with a ground wire, continue to the next step. Twist all neutral wires together and connect them to ground using an appropriate connector, ensuring adequate slack for elbow operation. If using a cold shrink grounding kit, refer to the instructions supplied with that kit to complete the installation.

  6. Connect the Elbow to the Bushing Plug

Re-confirm that the transformer and elbow are de-energized. Lubricate the receptacle portion of the elbow connector and the mating bushing with the supplied lubricant. Using a fully insulated hotstick tool, operate the elbow to connect it to the bushing. Do not operate by hand. Ensure the probe tip is inserted approximately 2 inches (50mm) into the bushing, then immediately push the elbow home with a fast, firm, straight motion to engage the internal lock on the elbow connector and bushing interface.
