How to Install 252LR Deadbreak Elbow Connectors
This guide provides step-by-step instructions for installing the 252LR Deadbreak Elbow Connector, designed to terminate UD cable with concentric neutral and semi-con shielding, and connect to 25kV class deadbreak bushings.
Estimated time: 1h 30m
Tools needed:
Wrench, Crimp tool, Wire brush, Hot stick, Wire strippers, Suitable sensing device (for capacitive test points)
Supplies needed:
Elbow Connector Housing, Compression Lug, Probe, Probe Contact, Lubricant (supplied), Hold-down Bail, UD cable (concentric neutral and semi-con shielding), No. 14 AWG / 2.5mm copper wire, Appropriate connector (for grounding), HV insulated cap(s) or connector(s) (if shipping covers are removed), Test point cap (if not installed)
- Review Safety and Perform Pre-Installation Checks
**DANGER: All apparatus must be de-energized during installation or removal of part(s). Do not touch or move energized products in the work area. This product should be installed only by competent personnel trained in good safety practices involving high voltage electrical equipment.** Inspect all parts for damage, rating, and compatibility with mating parts. Check the elbow housing cable entrance size and compression lug size for proper fit with the cable. Thread the probe into the compression lug to check threads; if resistance is encountered, check for damage and replace the component. Ensure all required tools are at hand and maintain cleanliness throughout the procedure. If a test point cap is not installed, lubricate the cap and test point, then install the cap.
- Train the Cable
Train the UD cable as shown in the diagram to ease operation, ensuring a minimum of 20 inches (508.0mm) beyond the end of the cable pad mount transformer. Cut any excess cable squarely at the center line of the bushing.
- Prepare the Cable End
Unwrap and bind concentric neutral wires 8-1/2 inches (216.0mm) back from the end of the cable. Remove the shield and insulation from the cable end, cutting squarely without nicking the conductor. Wire brush bare aluminum conductors and immediately install the compression lug, rotating to spread inhibitor. Position the compression lug so the contact threaded hole aligns with the bushing bore. Crimp the lug according to the crimp chart, starting at the crimp line mark and rotating 180 degrees for each successive crimp. Carefully wipe excessive inhibitor from the outside of the lug and cable. Remove the semi-con shield as shown, and bevel the insulation end 1/8 inch (3.2mm) maximum. Thoroughly clean the insulation to remove all traces of conductive residue.
- Assemble the Elbow Connector
Clean and lubricate the cable insulation and the inside of the elbow housing with the supplied lubricant; do not substitute. Slide the elbow connector onto the cable with a back and forth twisting motion, then wipe off all excess silicone lubricant. Align the elbow with the compression lug's threaded hole. Thread the probe into the lug by hand, taking care not to cross-thread. Tighten with a wrench until the wrench bends.
- Install the Hold-down Bail
Place the hold-down bail into the hold-down bracket. Compress the bail and insert it securely into the brackets.
- Connect the Concentric Neutral
Using a separate No. 14 AWG (2.5mm) copper wire or equivalent, insert one end through the grounding eye on the elbow. Twist it tightly, taking care not to damage the eye. Twist all neutral wires together and connect them to ground using an appropriate connector, ensuring adequate slack in the wires for elbow operation.
- Connect Elbow to Bushing
Clean the receptacle portion of the elbow connector and the mating bushing, and lubricate with the supplied lubricant. **LUBRICATE ONLY IF THE TRANSFORMER AND ELBOW ARE KNOWN TO BE DE-ENERGIZED.** Use a fully insulated hot stick to place the elbow on the bushing. **DO NOT OPERATE BY HAND. DO NOT SEPARATE IF ENERGIZED.**
- Secure the Elbow with Bail
Pull the hold-down bail up over the crown or top of the elbow so that the eyebolt on the bail is directly over the operating eye. Tighten down on the elbow locator by turning the eyebolt in a clockwise direction. Adjust the nut on the eyebolt until it allows the eyebolt to seat securely in the locator. The nut should act as a stop to prevent the eyebolt from applying excessive force on the elbow. Once the nut is in its final position, it will not need to be readjusted when removing and replacing the elbow.
- Perform Voltage Test (Optional)
If equipped with an integral capacitance test point, remove the test point cap with a hotstick, peeling it off at an angle. **WARNING: The voltage test point is a capacitance device and not directly connected to the conductor. Do not use conventional voltage measuring equipment. Follow the manufacturer’s directions for a suitable sensing device made for capacitive test points to determine if the cable is energized. Contamination, moisture, dirt, or wrong equipment can provide a false "no voltage" indication. Treat the elbow as energized until the "no voltage" indication is confirmed by other means to prevent serious or fatal injury.** After testing, clean and lubricate the inside surface of the cap with silicone grease and replace it on the test point.
