How to Install the Elastimold 252LR Deadbreak Elbow Connector

This guide provides step-by-step instructions for the safe and proper installation of the Elastimold 252LR Deadbreak Elbow Connector, including cable preparation, assembly, and connection to a deadbreak bushing.

Estimated time: 1h 30m

Tools needed:

Wrench, Hotstick (fully insulated), Wire brush, Crimp tool, Wire strippers

Supplies needed:

252LR Elbow Connector Housing, Compression Lug, Probe, Probe Contact, Lubricant (supplied with kit), Hold-down Bail, UD Cable (concentric neutral and semi-con shielding), No. 14 AWG (2.5mm) Copper Wire, Appropriate grounding connector, Silicone grease (for test point cap)

  1. Perform Pre-Installation Checks and Safety Procedures

DANGER: Ensure all apparatus is de-energized during installation. Do not touch or move energized products in the work area. Inspect all parts for damage, correct rating, and compatibility with mating parts. Verify the elbow housing cable entrance size and compression lug size match your cable. Thread the probe into the compression lug by hand to check for damage or resistance; replace components if damaged. Ensure the test point cap is installed, lubricated, and properly seated if not already. Gather all required tools and maintain a clean work area throughout the procedure.

  2. Train and Prepare the Cable

Train the UD cable as shown in the documentation, ensuring a minimum of 20 inches (508.0mm) extends beyond the end of the bushing pad. Cut the excess cable squarely at the center line of the bushing. Unwrap and bind the concentric neutral wires 8-1/2 inches (216.0mm) back from the end of the cable. Remove the semi-con shield and insulation from the cable end, cutting squarely and taking care not to nick the conductor. Wire brush the bare aluminum conductors immediately. Install the compression lug onto the conductor, rotating it to spread the inhibitor. Position the lug so its contact threaded hole aligns with the bushing bore. Crimp the lug according to the crimp chart, starting at the crimp line mark and rotating 180 degrees for each successive crimp. Carefully wipe off any excessive inhibitor. Remove the remaining semi-con shield as indicated and bevel the insulation end a maximum of 1/8 inch (3.2mm). Thoroughly clean the insulation to remove all traces of conductive residue.

  3. Assemble the Elbow Connector

Clean and lubricate the cable insulation and the inside of the elbow housing with the supplied lubricant. DO NOT SUBSTITUTE other lubricants. Keep insulation clean of dirt and grime. Slide the elbow connector onto the cable using a back-and-forth twisting motion. Wipe off all excess silicone lubricant. Align the elbow with the compression lug’s threaded hole. Thread the probe into the lug by hand, ensuring not to cross-thread. Tighten the probe with the supplied wrench until the wrench bends, indicating proper torque.

  4. Connect Concentric Neutrals and Assemble Bail

Insert one end of a No. 14 AWG (2.5mm) copper wire through the grounding eye on the elbow and twist it tightly, taking care not to damage the eye. Twist all concentric neutral wires together and connect them to ground using an appropriate connector, ensuring adequate slack for elbow operation. Place the hold-down bail into the hold-down bracket, then compress the bail and insert it into the brackets.

  5. Connect Elbow to Bushing and Secure

DANGER: Ensure the transformer and elbow are known to be de-energized before proceeding. Clean the receptacle portion of the elbow connector and the mating bushing, then lubricate them with the supplied lubricant. Use a fully insulated hot stick to place the elbow onto the bushing. DO NOT OPERATE BY HAND. DO NOT SEPARATE IF ENERGIZED. Pull the hold-down bail up over the crown or top of the elbow so the eyebolt is directly over the operating eye. Tighten the elbow locator by turning the eyebolt clockwise. Adjust the nut on the eyebolt until it allows the eyebolt to seat securely in the locator, acting as a stop to prevent excessive force. Once the nut is in its final position, it will not need to be readjusted when removing and replacing the elbow.
