How to Install the 252LR Deadbreak Elbow Connector
This guide provides step-by-step instructions for installing the Elastimold 252LR Deadbreak Elbow Connector, designed to terminate UD cable with concentric neutral and semi-con shielding to a 25kV class deadbreak bushing.
Estimated time: 1h
Tools needed:
Wrench, Crimp tool, Wire brush, Hot stick, Wire strippers
Supplies needed:
Elbow Connector Housing, Compression Lug, Probe, Probe Contact, Lubricant (silicone grease), Hold-down Bail, No. 14 AWG copper wire, Grounding connector
- Prepare for Installation and Inspect Components
DANGER: Ensure all apparatus is de-energized before beginning installation. Inspect all parts (Elbow Connector Housing, Compression Lug, Probe, Probe Contact, Wrench, Lubricant, Hold-down Bail) for damage, correct rating, and compatibility. Verify the elbow housing cable entrance size and compression lug size match the cable. Check the probe threads by hand-threading into the compression lug; replace if resistance is encountered.
- Train and Cut the Cable
Train the UD cable to allow for ease of operation, ensuring a minimum of 20 inches (508.0mm) beyond the end of the cable pad mount transformer. Cut the excess cable squarely at the center line of the bushing.
- Prepare Cable End and Install Compression Lug
Unwrap and bind the concentric neutral wires 8-1/2 inches (216.0mm) back from the cable end. Remove the shield and insulation squarely, taking care not to nick the conductor. Wire brush bare aluminum conductors immediately and install the compression lug, rotating it to spread inhibitor. Position the lug so its contact threaded hole aligns with the bushing bore. Crimp the lug according to the crimp chart, starting at the crimp line mark and rotating 180 degrees for each successive crimp. Carefully wipe off excessive inhibitor. Remove the semi-con shield as shown in the template and bevel the insulation end a maximum of 1/8 inch (3.2mm). Thoroughly clean the insulation to remove all conductive residue.
- Assemble Elbow Housing and Probe
Clean and lubricate the cable insulation and the inside of the elbow housing with the supplied lubricant; do not substitute. Slide the elbow connector onto the cable using a back-and-forth twisting motion, then wipe off any excess silicone lubricant. Align the elbow with the compression lug’s threaded hole. Thread the probe into the lug by hand, ensuring not to cross-thread, and tighten with the supplied wrench until the wrench bends.
- Install the Hold-down Bail
Place the hold-down bail into the hold-down bracket on the elbow assembly.
- Connect Concentric Neutral to Ground
Insert one end of a separate No. 14 AWG (2.5mm) copper wire through the grounding eye on the elbow and twist it tightly, being careful not to damage the eye. Twist all concentric neutral wires together and connect them to ground using an appropriate connector, ensuring adequate slack for elbow operation.
- Connect Elbow to Mating Bushing
Clean the receptacle portion of the elbow connector and the mating bushing, then lubricate them with the supplied lubricant. IMPORTANT: Only lubricate if the transformer and elbow are known to be de-energized. Use a fully insulated hot stick to place the elbow onto the bushing. DO NOT OPERATE BY HAND. DO NOT SEPARATE IF ENERGIZED.
- Secure Elbow with Hold-down Bail
Pull the hold-down bail up over the crown of the elbow so the eyebolt is directly over the operating eye. Tighten the eyebolt by turning it clockwise. Adjust the nut on the eyebolt to allow it to seat securely in the locator, acting as a stop to prevent excessive force on the elbow. Once the nut is in final position, it will not have to be readjusted when removing and replacing elbow.
