How to Install the 252LR Deadbreak Elbow Connector

This guide provides step-by-step instructions for the safe installation and connection of the Elastimold 252LR Deadbreak Elbow Connector to UD cable and a 25kV class deadbreak bushing or accessory device.

Estimated time: 1h 30m

Tools needed:

Wrench, Wire brush, Crimp tool, Fully insulated hot stick, Suitable sensing device (for voltage test)

Supplies needed:

Elbow Connector Housing, Compression Lug, Probe, Lubricant (supplied with kit), Hold-down Bail, No. 14 AWG (2.5mm) copper wire, Appropriate connector (for grounding), HV insulated cap(s) or connector(s) (if replacing shipping covers), Silicone grease (for test point cap)

  1. De-energize and Inspect Apparatus

DANGER: Ensure all apparatus is de-energized before beginning installation or removal of parts. Do not touch or move energized products. Inspect all parts for damage, correct rating, and compatibility with mating parts.

  2. Verify Package Contents and Compatibility

Check the package contents to ensure all parts (Elbow Connector Housing, Compression Lug, Probe, Probe Contact, Wrench, Lubricant, Hold-down Bail) are present and undamaged. Verify the elbow housing cable entrance size and compression lug size match your cable. Check probe threads by hand-threading into the compression lug; replace if resistance is encountered.

  3. Prepare for Installation

Read the entire installation instruction before starting. Gather all required tools and supplies, and maintain cleanliness throughout the procedure.

  4. Train Cable

Train the UD cable as shown in the diagram to ease operation, ensuring a minimum of 20 inches (508.0mm) beyond the end of the cable pad mount transformer. Cut any excess cable squarely at the center line of the bushing.

  5. Prepare Cable End

Unwrap and bind concentric neutral wires 8-1/2 inches (216.0mm) back from the end of the cable. Remove the shield and insulation from the cable end, cutting squarely without nicking the conductor. Bevel the insulation end a maximum of 1/8 inch (3.2mm).

  6. Install Compression Lug

Wire brush bare aluminum conductors and immediately install the compression lug. Rotate the lug to spread inhibitor. Position the compression lug so the contact threaded hole aligns with the bushing bore. Crimp the lug according to the crimp chart, starting at the crimp line mark and rotating 180 degrees for each successive crimp. Carefully wipe excessive inhibitor from the outside of the lug and cable.

  7. Clean Insulation

Thoroughly clean the cable insulation to remove all traces of conductive residue, ensuring a straight, smooth, and squared surface without cuts or nicks.

  8. Assemble Elbow Housing

Clean and lubricate the cable insulation and the inside of the elbow housing with the supplied lubricant; do not substitute. Slide the elbow connector onto the cable with a back and forth twisting motion. Wipe off all excess silicone lubricant.

  9. Connect Probe to Lug

Align the elbow with the compression lug’s threaded hole. Thread the probe into the lug by hand, taking care not to cross-thread. Tighten with the supplied wrench until the wrench bends, indicating proper torque.

  10. Assemble Hold-down Bail

Place the hold-down bail into the hold-down bracket, compressing the bail and inserting it securely into the brackets.

  11. Connect Concentric Neutral Wires

Insert one end of a separate No. 14 AWG (2.5mm) copper wire through the grounding eye on the elbow and twist tightly. Twist all neutral wires together and connect them to ground using an appropriate connector, ensuring adequate slack in wires for elbow operation.

  12. Connect Elbow to Bushing

Clean the receptacle portion of the elbow connector and the mating bushing, and lubricate with the supplied lubricant ONLY if the transformer and elbow are known to be de-energized. Use a fully insulated hot stick to place the elbow onto the bushing; DO NOT OPERATE BY HAND or separate if energized.

  13. Secure Elbow with Bail

Pull the hold-down bail up over the crown of the elbow so the eyebolt is directly over the operating eye. Tighten the eyebolt by turning it clockwise, adjusting the nut to seat securely in the locator without applying excessive force. The nut will act as a stop to prevent excessive force on the elbow.

  14. Perform Voltage Test (Optional)

If required, remove the test point cap with a hot stick, peeling it off at an angle. WARNING: The voltage test point is a capacitance device; do not use conventional voltage measuring equipment. Use a suitable sensing device designed for capacitive test points and follow its manufacturer's directions. Treat the elbow as energized until a 'no voltage' indication is confirmed by other means. After testing, clean and lubricate the inside of the cap with silicone grease and replace it.
