How to Install K655/K675LR Deadbreak Elbow Connectors
This guide provides detailed instructions for the installation and setup of 600-ampere or 900-ampere K655/K675LR deadbreak elbow connectors. These connectors provide fully shielded, fully submersible deadfront cable connections to high voltage apparatus.
Estimated time: 1h 30m
Tools needed:
Wire strippers, Crimping tool, Wire brush, Hotstick, Suitable voltage sensing device, Torque wrench
Supplies needed:
K655/K675LR Deadbreak Elbow Connector Kit, Insulating Plug (if applicable), Lubricant, Silicone lubricant, Grounding wire (minimum No. 14 AWG Copper), Suitable grounding connector, Waterproofing material, Tape marker
- De-energize and Inspect Apparatus
Ensure all apparatus is de-energized before beginning installation or removal of parts. Do not touch or move energized products. Inspect all parts for damage, proper rating, and compatibility with mating parts.
- Verify Package Contents and Compatibility
Check the contents of the package to ensure all components are complete and undamaged. Verify that all components fit properly with the cable and/or mating products.
- Gather Tools and Maintain Cleanliness
Have all required tools at hand before starting the procedure. Maintain cleanliness throughout the entire installation process to prevent contamination.
- Position and Cut Cable
Assemble the cable in its final position with enough slack for elbow removal. For concentric neutral cable, unwind the concentric neutral wires. Cut the cable 1-3/4 inches (45mm) from the centerline of the mating product.
- Clean Cable Outer Surface
Clean the outer surface of the cable for a distance of 24 inches (610mm) or up to the bent-back concentric neutral wires.
- Prepare Cable Jacket and Shield
Follow the specific cable preparation steps (A, B, or C) that apply to your cable type (e.g., non-jacketed, jacketed, Unishield, lead sheath). Remove the outer jacket (if applicable) and prepare the cable to the specified dimensions for insulation, semi-con shield, and tape marker locations.
- Bevel Insulation and Install Cable Adapter
Bevel the end of the cable insulation at a 45-degree angle, approximately 1/4 inch (6mm) back. Thoroughly clean and then lubricate the cable insulation, working towards the semi-con shield. Install the cable adapter, small end first, until it is flush with the edge of the tape marker.
- Verify Conductor Length
Remove the protruding cable insulation by cutting it even with the end of the cable adapter. Do not cut or nick the cable adapter or the conductor. The exposed conductor length must be between 4-1/4 inches and 4-9/16 inches (108mm-116mm). If not, redo the assembly.
- Insert Conductor into Compression Lug
For copper conductors, fully insert the conductor into the compression lug. For aluminum conductors, wire brush the conductor immediately before fully inserting it into the compression lug.
- Crimp Compression Lug
Measure the 'Check Dimension' before crimping; it should be less than 6-3/8 inches. Crimp the compression lug following the crimping instructions supplied with the lug. Locate the first crimp on the end closest to the cable adapter.
- Clean Lug and Verify Dimensions
Wipe all excess inhibitor from the compression lug and cable adapter surface after crimping. The distance from the end of the compression lug to the cable adapter after crimping must be between 6-3/8 inches to 7-1/8 inches (162mm-181mm). If not, redo the assembly.
- Lubricate and Install Elbow
Lubricate the cable adapter and the inside of the elbow cable entrance. Install the elbow onto the cable adapter until it cannot advance further.
- Verify Adapter Flushness and Remove Tape
Ensure the cable adapter is still flush with the tape marker. If not, reposition the cable adapter. Once confirmed, remove the tape marker.
- Prepare Mating Parts
Remove protective caps from the elbow and the mating part. Hand tighten the threaded stud supplied with the elbow into the mating part, if the mating part is not already equipped with a stud.
- Clean and Lubricate Mating Surfaces
Clean and lubricate both the elbow and the mating part with the supplied lubricant. Keep all surfaces clean during this process.
- Connect Elbow to Mating Part
Push the elbow onto the mating part, carefully lining up the hole in the compression lug with the stud on the mating part. Do not connect or disconnect mating products while energized.
- Connect Opposite Mating Part
Clean and lubricate the mating part for the opposite end of the elbow. Insert this mating part into the elbow, engage the threads, and hand tighten. Torque the mating part according to the instructions supplied with it.
- Install Insulating Plug Cap (if applicable)
If an insulating plug is used as a mating part, clean and lubricate the inner surface of the voltage detection cap. Place it on the elbow and push down hard until the cap snaps into place.
- Connect Grounding Wire
Insert one end of a wire with ampacity at least equivalent to No. 14 AWG Copper through the grounding eye and twist to make a small loop, ensuring not to damage the eye. Connect this wire to ground using a suitable connector. The cable shield must be grounded according to instructions or an alternate method.
- Waterproof Cable Jacket
Waterproof the jacket of the cable at this point to prevent moisture from entering the cable, using appropriate waterproofing material.
- Remove Test Point Cap
Remove the test point cap with a hotstick. When removing, peel off at an angle rather than pulling directly in line with the test point assembly.
- Perform Voltage Test
WARNING: The voltage test point is a capacitance device, not directly connected to the conductor. Do not use conventional voltage measuring equipment. Test with a suitable sensing device, made for use with separable connectors with capacitive test points, to determine if the cable is energized. Treat the elbow as energized until a 'no voltage' indication is confirmed by other means.
- Replace Test Point Cap
After voltage detection has been made, clean and lubricate the inside surface of the cap with silicone lubricant and replace it securely on the test point.
