How to Install the 252LR Deadbreak Elbow Connector
This guide provides step-by-step instructions for installing the Elastimold 252LR deadbreak elbow connector on UD cable with concentric neutral and semi-con shielding, including cable preparation, assembly, and connection to a 25kV class deadbreak bushing.
Estimated time: 1h 30m
Tools needed:
Wrench, Wire brush, Crimp tool, Fully insulated hot stick, Suitable voltage sensing device
Supplies needed:
Elbow Connector Housing, Compression Lug, Probe, Probe Contact, Lubricant (silicone grease), Hold-down Bail, No. 14 AWG / 2.5mm copper wire, Appropriate grounding connector, Test point cap (if not pre-installed)
- Perform Initial Checks and Ensure Safety
DANGER: All apparatus must be de-energized during installation or removal of parts. Do not touch or move energized products in the work area. Inspect all parts for damage, rating, and compatibility with mating parts. Check the package contents to ensure they are complete and undamaged. Verify the elbow housing cable entrance size and compression lug size for proper fit with the cable. Thread the probe into the compression lug by hand to check threads; if resistance is encountered, inspect for damage and replace components as needed. If the test point cap is not installed, lubricate the cap and test point, then install the cap. Have all required tools at hand and maintain cleanliness throughout the procedure.
- Train and Prepare the Cable
Train the UD cable as shown in the diagram to ease operation, ensuring a minimum of 20 inches (508.0mm) beyond the end of the cable pad mount transformer. Cut any excess cable squarely at the centerline of the bushing. Unwrap and bind concentric neutral wires 8-1/2 inches (216.0mm) back from the end of the cable. Remove the shield and insulation from the cable end, cutting squarely and taking care not to nick the conductor. Wire brush bare aluminum conductors and immediately install the compression lug, rotating it to spread the inhibitor. Position the compression lug so its contact threaded hole aligns with the bushing bore. Crimp the lug according to the crimp chart, starting at the crimp line mark and rotating 180 degrees for each successive crimp. Carefully wipe excessive inhibitor from the outside of the lug and cable. Remove the semi-con shield as indicated (6-7/8 inches / 175.0mm from the lug end). Bevel the insulation end a maximum of 1/8 inch (3.2mm). Thoroughly clean the insulation to remove all traces of conductive residue.
- Assemble the Elbow Connector
Clean and lubricate the cable insulation and the inside of the elbow housing with the supplied lubricant; DO NOT SUBSTITUTE other lubricants. Slide the elbow connector onto the cable with a back and forth twisting motion. Wipe off all excess silicone lubricant. Align the elbow with the compression lug's threaded hole. Thread the probe into the lug by hand, taking care not to cross-thread. Tighten the probe with the supplied wrench until the wrench bends.
- Assemble Bail and Connect Neutral Wires
Place the hold-down bail in the hold-down bracket, then compress the bail and insert it into the brackets. Using a separate No. 14 AWG (2.5mm) copper wire or equivalent, insert one end through the grounding eye on the elbow and twist tightly, taking care not to damage the eye. Twist all neutral wires together and connect them to ground using an appropriate connector, ensuring adequate slack in the wires for elbow operation.
- Connect Elbow to Bushing and Secure
Clean the receptacle portion of the elbow connector and the mating bushing, and lubricate with the supplied lubricant. LUBRICATE ONLY IF THE TRANSFORMER AND ELBOW ARE KNOWN TO BE DE-ENERGIZED. Use a fully insulated hot stick to place the elbow on the bushing; DO NOT OPERATE BY HAND and DO NOT SEPARATE IF ENERGIZED. Pull the hold-down bail up over the crown or top of the elbow so that the eyebolt on the bail is directly over the operating eye. Tighten down on the elbow locator by turning the eyebolt in a clockwise direction. Adjust the nut on the eyebolt until it allows the eyebolt to seat securely in the locator, acting as a stop to prevent excessive force on the elbow.
- Perform Voltage Test (Post-Installation Verification)
Remove the test point cap with a hotstick, peeling it off at an angle rather than pulling directly in line with the test point assembly. WARNING: The voltage test point is a capacitance device and is not directly connected to the conductor. Do not use conventional voltage measuring equipment. Follow the manufacturer’s directions for the suitable sensing device used to determine if the cable is energized. Contamination, moisture, dirt, or using the wrong measuring equipment can provide a false “no voltage” indication on an energized elbow. To prevent serious or fatal injury, treat the elbow as energized until the “no voltage” test point indication is confirmed by other means. After voltage detection, clean and lubricate the inside surface of the cap with silicone grease and replace it on the test point.
