How to Install the 252LR Deadbreak Elbow Connector
This guide provides step-by-step instructions for installing the 252LR Deadbreak Elbow Connector, designed to terminate UD cable and connect to 25kV class deadbreak bushings or accessory devices. It covers cable preparation, assembly, and wiring.
Estimated time: 1h
Tools needed:
Wire brush, Crimp tool (refer to crimp chart for specific type), Fully insulated hot stick
Supplies needed:
252LR Deadbreak Elbow Connector kit (includes Housing, Compression Lug, Probe, Probe Contact, Wrench, Lubricant, Hold-down Bail), UD cable (with concentric neutral and semi-con shielding), No. 14 AWG (2.5mm) copper wire, Appropriate connector for grounding neutral wires
- Perform Pre-Installation Checks and Safety Measures
DANGER: Ensure all apparatus is de-energized before starting installation. This product must be installed by competent personnel trained in high voltage electrical equipment safety. Inspect all parts for damage, rating, and compatibility with mating parts. Verify the elbow housing cable entrance size and compression lug size match the cable. Check probe threads by hand-threading into the compression lug; replace damaged components if resistance is encountered. Have all required tools at hand and maintain cleanliness. If the test point cap is not installed, lubricate the cap and test point, then install the cap.
- Train the Cable
Train the UD cable as shown in the documentation (20 inches minimum beyond the end of the cable pad mount transformer) to ease operation. Cut excess cable squarely at the centerline of the bushing.
- Prepare Cable Neutral and Insulation
Unwrap and bind concentric neutral wires 8-1/2 inches (216.0mm) back from the cable end. Remove the shield and insulation from the cable end, cutting squarely without nicking the conductor. Remove the semi-con shield as shown in the template. Bevel the insulation end 1/8 inch (3.2mm) maximum. Thoroughly clean the insulation to remove all traces of conductive residue.
- Install and Crimp the Compression Lug
Wire brush bare aluminum conductors and immediately install the compression lug, rotating to spread inhibitor. Position the lug so the contact threaded hole aligns with the bushing bore. Crimp the lug according to the crimp chart packaged with the lug, starting at the crimp line mark and rotating 180 degrees for each successive crimp. Carefully wipe excessive inhibitor from the outside of the lug and cable.
- Assemble the Elbow Connector Housing
Clean and lubricate the cable insulation and the inside of the elbow housing with the supplied lubricant. DO NOT SUBSTITUTE other lubricants. Slide the elbow connector onto the cable using a back and forth twisting motion. Wipe off all excess silicone lubricant. Align the elbow with the compression lug’s threaded hole. Thread the probe into the lug by hand, ensuring not to cross-thread. Tighten the probe with the supplied wrench until the wrench bends.
- Assemble the Hold-Down Bail
Place the hold-down bail into the hold-down bracket. Compress the bail and insert it into the brackets.
- Connect Concentric Neutral Wires to Ground
Using a separate No. 14 AWG (2.5mm) copper wire, insert one end through the grounding eye on the elbow. Twist it tightly, taking care not to damage the eye. Twist all neutral wires together and connect them to ground using an appropriate connector. Provide adequate slack in the wires for elbow operation.
- Connect Elbow to Mating Bushing Plug
Clean the receptacle portion of the elbow connector and the mating bushing. Lubricate both with the supplied lubricant ONLY if the transformer and elbow are known to be de-energized. Use a fully insulated hot stick to place the elbow onto the bushing. DANGER: Do not operate by hand. Do not separate if energized.
- Secure the Elbow with the Hold-Down Bail
Pull the hold-down bail up over the crown or top of the elbow so that the eyebolt on the bail is directly over the operating eye. Tighten down on the elbow locator by turning the eyebolt in a clockwise direction. Adjust the nut on the eyebolt until it allows the eyebolt to seat securely in the locator. The nut should act as a stop to prevent the eyebolt from applying excessive force on the elbow.
