How to Perform Voltage Testing with the 200TC-4 Direct Voltage Test Port Adapter
This guide outlines the safe procedure for using the 200TC-4 Direct Voltage Test Port Adapter with the CHANCE Auto-Ranging Voltage Indicator to test voltage on energized direct access port connectors. It covers the installation, testing, and removal of the adapter.
Estimated time: 15m
Tools needed:
Hotstick tool, CHANCE Auto-Ranging Voltage Indicator (Catalog No. C403-3374)
Supplies needed:
Tube Lubricant, Approved eye protection, Insulated cap (for access port)
- Prepare for Testing
Check the contents of the package to ensure they are complete and undamaged. Inspect the 200TC-4 adapter and all mating parts for damage, proper rating, and compatibility. Gather all required tools and maintain cleanliness throughout the procedure. Wear approved eye protection. WARNING: DO NOT USE VOLTMETERS OTHER THAN THE CHANCE Auto-Ranging Voltage Indicator, Catalog No. C403-3374 with the 200TC-4 Direct Voltage Test Port Adapter.
- Remove Access Port Cap
DANGER: The elbow access port provides direct access to the cable conductor. The Direct Voltage Test Port Adapter is not a shielded device and must be considered live front. Direct contact can cause serious or fatal injury. If fluid has been injected into the elbow, there may be considerable pressure which will release when the cap is removed. Using a hotstick tool, remove the existing insulated cap or fluid injection cap from the access port by rotating the cap while exerting a pull force.
- Prepare the Test Adapter
Clean and lubricate the test rod of the 200TC-4 Direct Voltage Test Port Adapter and its inside interface. Attach the CHANCE Auto-Ranging Voltage Indicator (Catalog No. C403-3374) to the threaded stud of the direct voltage test port adapter.
- Insert the Test Adapter
Using the CHANCE Voltage Indicator hotstick tool, carefully insert the test rod of the direct voltage test port adapter into the elbow access port. Ensure the direct voltage test port adapter is fully seated. CAUTION: The probe of the direct voltage test port adapter must make direct contact with the conductor to obtain voltage indication. If the adapter is not fully seated, NO INDICATION WILL BE OBTAINED.
- Perform Voltage Detection and Remove Adapter
After voltage detection has been made, immediately remove the direct voltage test port adapter by exerting a pull force with the CHANCE Voltage Indicator hotstick tool. DANGER: DO NOT allow the direct voltage test port adapter to remain on the access port after testing is completed. Direct contact with the access port or direct voltage test port adapter can cause serious or fatal injury.
- Reinstall Insulated Cap
Clean and lubricate the inside of the insulated cap and its rod. Install the insulated cap onto the access port using a hotstick tool. CAUTION: The access port provides direct access to the cable conductor and must not remain uncovered. When not covered with an insulated cap, the port must be considered live front.
