How to Perform a Voltage Test Using the 200TC-2 Direct Voltage Test Port Adapter
This guide provides step-by-step instructions for safely installing and operating the 200TC-2 Direct Voltage Test Port Adapter with a Ross Meter Hi-Z VM25SE-A/VMP25B to test for voltage on direct access port products.
Estimated time: 20m
Tools needed:
Hotstick tool, Ross Meter Hi-Z VM25SE-A/VMP25B, Approved eye protection
Supplies needed:
Tube Lubricant, Direct Voltage Test Port Adapter (200TC-2), Insulated cap
- Review Safety and Prepare Work Area
Before starting, ensure you have read and understood all safety warnings, especially regarding high voltage equipment. Confirm all apparatus is de-energized if performing initial installation of the main connector. For adapter operation, be aware that the elbow may be energized, and the 200TC-2 is a live-front device. Always wear approved eye protection.
- Inspect All Components
Check the contents of the package to ensure all parts are complete and undamaged. Inspect all components, including the 200TC-2 adapter, for proper fit with the cable and/or mating products. Remove any protective shipping covers from the main connector if applicable, replacing them with appropriate HV insulated caps or connectors.
- Prepare Ross Meter
Read and understand the separate operating instructions for the Ross Meter Hi-Z VM25E-A/VMP25B voltmeter. Verify that you are using only the specified Ross Meter model for this procedure.
- Remove Access Port Cap
Using a hotstick tool, remove the access port insulated cap or fluid injection cap from the elbow by rotating the cap while exerting a pull force. Be prepared for potential pressure release if fluid has been injected previously.
- Clean and Lubricate Adapter
Clean and lubricate the test rod and the inside interface of the direct voltage test port adapter (200TC-2) with the provided tube lubricant.
- Assemble Meter and Adapter
Attach the threaded stud of the Ross Meter to the direct voltage test port adapter, ensuring a secure connection.
- Configure Ross Meter Mode
Set the knob on the Ross Meter to the 'DIRECT LINE' mode. Failure to follow this procedure can cause serious damage to the Ross Meter.
- Insert Adapter for Voltage Test
Using the Ross Meter hotstick tool, carefully insert the test rod of the direct voltage test port adapter into the elbow access port. Ensure the direct voltage test port adapter is fully seated to make direct contact with the conductor and obtain an accurate voltage indication. If not fully seated, no indication will be obtained.
- Remove Adapter After Testing
After voltage detection has been made, immediately remove the direct voltage test port adapter by exerting a pull force with the Ross Meter hotstick tool. Do NOT allow the direct voltage test port adapter to remain on the access port, as it is a live-front device and direct contact can cause serious or fatal injury.
- Reinstall Insulated Cap
Clean and lubricate the inside of the insulated cap and its rod. Using a hotstick tool, install the insulated cap back onto the access port. The access port provides direct access to the cable conductor and must not remain uncovered; when not covered with an insulated cap, the port must be considered live front.
