How to Install the 164FT Feed-Thru as a Junction Point
This guide provides step-by-step instructions for installing the 164FT Feed-Thru/Grounding Device, primarily for use as a junction point. It covers initial setup, grounding, and connecting loadbreak elbows.
Estimated time: 1h
Tools needed:
Hotstick, Wrench or Screwdriver, Voltage detection device
Supplies needed:
Feed-thru Body Complete with Mounting Hardware, Lubricant (supplied), No. 14 copper wire (or equivalent) ground lead, Loadbreak elbows (mating parts)
- Prepare for Installation and Ensure Safety
Before beginning, read all instructions and the Loadbreak Elbow Operating Instructions (IS-167/168LR). Ensure all apparatus is de-energized during installation or removal of parts, except for test point caps and indicators. Verify all components are complete, undamaged, and compatible with mating parts. Have all required tools ready and maintain cleanliness throughout the procedure. This product must be installed only by competent personnel trained in high voltage electrical equipment safety practices.
- Connect the Ground Lead
Insert a No. 14 copper wire (or equivalent) ground lead into the grounding lug provided on the mounting hardware and firmly tighten the lug. Connect the opposite end of the ground lead to a reliable ground, ensuring enough slack is left to allow operation with a hotstick.
- Prepare the Feed-Thru Bushings
Remove any protective caps from the bushings of the feed-thru. These caps must not be on the bushings when the feed-thru is in use. Thoroughly clean the bushing surfaces and then lubricate them using only the lubricant supplied with the product. Do not substitute with other lubricants, as they may be harmful.
- Mount the Feed-Thru onto a Parking Stand
Firmly attach the feed-thru eye to a full insulated hotstick. Using the hotstick, carefully slide the feed-thru onto a parking stand. Unlock the hotstick and back off slightly to create space. Tighten the eyebolt by rotating the hotstick clockwise until it is snug. DO NOT OVERTIGHTEN. Release the hotstick from the feed-thru eye.
- Connect the First Loadbreak Elbow
Remove one loadbreak elbow from its apparatus loadbreak bushing, following the applicable loadbreak operating instructions (IS-165/166LR). Firmly attach a hotstick to the elbow. Insert the probe tip of the elbow into one side of the feed-thru until you feel the first slight resistance. Immediately push the elbow home with a fast, firm, straight motion to engage the internal lock on the mating interfaces.
- Connect the Second Loadbreak Elbow
Remove the second loadbreak elbow, following the applicable loadbreak operating instructions (IS-165/166LR). Firmly attach a hotstick to this elbow. Insert the probe tip into the remaining feed-thru bushing until the first slight resistance is felt. Immediately push the elbow home with a fast, firm, straight motion to engage the internal lock on the mating interfaces.
- Verify Complete Assembly
Inspect the assembled product. A complete assembly of an insulated cap or elbow is indicated when no portion of the yellow band is visible when viewed from the side.
