How to Install 167RLR/168RLR Loadbreak Replacement Elbow Connectors

Comprehensive guide for installing Elastimold 167RLR (without Test Point) and 168RLR (with Test Point) Loadbreak Replacement Elbow Connectors. This process converts a livefront termination to deadfront for UD cable, ensuring proper cable preparation, lug installation, elbow assembly, and grounding.

Estimated time: 1h 30m

Tools needed:

Hotstick (insulated live-line tool), Probe Wrench, Wire brush, Cutting tool, Wire strippers, Suitable sensing device for capacitive test points

Supplies needed:

Elbow Connector Housing (167RLR or 168RLR), Compression Lug, Probe, Lubricant (Do Not Substitute), Hose Clamp, Copper wire (No. 14 AWG / 2.5mm) or equivalent, Appropriate ground connector, Silicone grease

  1. Initial Safety and Component Verification

DANGER: Ensure all apparatus is de-energized before beginning installation or removal of parts. Check the contents of the package to ensure they are complete and undamaged. Verify all components fit properly with the cable and/or mating products. Thread the probe into the compression lug to check for resistance; if encountered, replace damaged components. Have all required tools at hand and maintain cleanliness throughout the procedure.

  2. Remove Existing Livefront Termination

DANGER: Confirm all apparatus is de-energized. Remove the rubber cap from the existing terminator. Cut off and remove the connector at the top of the terminator. Disconnect the ground lead from the base of the terminator. Finally, remove the terminator housing from the cable.

  3. Prepare Cable and Install Compression Lug

Train the cable to be straight and in-line with the bushing centerline. Cut the cable to measure 10-1/2 inches from the bushing centerline. If the insulation shield measures less than 6-1/2 inches, proceed. Remove 1-3/8 inches of cable insulation, cutting squarely and taking care not to nick the conductor. Wire brush the bare aluminum conductor immediately. Install the compression lug, rotating it to spread the inhibitor. Align the lug's threaded hole with the bushing bore. Crimp the lug according to the crimp chart, starting at the crimp line mark and rotating 180 degrees for each successive crimp. Carefully wipe any excessive inhibitor from the outside of the lug and cable.

  4. Assemble Elbow Housing and Probe

Lubricate the cable insulation and the inside of the elbow housing with the supplied lubricant; DO NOT SUBSTITUTE other lubricants. Keep the insulation clean of dirt and grime, and do not introduce grease into the gap between the lug and insulation. Slide the elbow connector onto the cable using a back-and-forth twisting motion. Wipe off any excess grease. Align the elbow with the compression lug's threaded hole. Thread the probe into the lug by hand, ensuring not to cross-thread. The probe should turn freely for approximately four turns before becoming snug. Tighten the probe with the wrench until the wrench bends.

  5. Connect Concentric Neutral

Using a separate copper wire (No. 14 AWG / 2.5mm) or equivalent, insert one end through the grounding eye on the elbow and twist it tight, being careful not to damage the eye. Twist all neutral wires together and connect them to ground using an appropriate connector, ensuring adequate slack in the wires for elbow operation. Add the supplied hose clamp as shown in the documentation and tighten it snugly, but do not overtighten.

  6. Connect Assembled Elbow to Bushing Plug

Lubricate the receptacle portion of the elbow connector and the mating bushing with the supplied lubricant ONLY IF THE TRANSFORMER AND ELBOW ARE KNOWN TO BE DE-ENERGIZED. Securely fasten a hotstick to the loadbreak connector pulling eye. After establishing firm footing and positive control, place the elbow connector receptacle area over the bushing plug, inserting the elbow male contact into the bushing until slight resistance is felt. Immediately push the elbow home with a fast, firm, straight motion to engage the internal lock on the elbow and bushing interface. Apply sufficient force to ensure the internal lock engages.

  7. Verify Voltage at Test Point (168RLR Only)

For 168RLR models, remove the test point cap with a hotstick, peeling it off at an angle rather than pulling directly in line. WARNING: The voltage test point is a capacitance device and is not directly connected to the conductor. Do not use conventional voltage measuring equipment. Follow the manufacturer's directions for the specific meter used. Test with a suitable sensing device designed for capacitive test points to determine if the cable is energized. Treat the elbow as energized until a 'no voltage' indication is confirmed by other means. After testing, clean and lubricate the inside surface of the cap with silicone grease and replace it on the test point.
