How to Install Elastimold 167RLR/168RLR Loadbreak Replacement Elbow Connectors

This guide provides step-by-step instructions for the safe installation and initial setup of Elastimold 167RLR and 168RLR Loadbreak Replacement Elbow Connectors, including cable preparation, lug installation, elbow assembly, and neutral connection.

Estimated time: 1h 30m

Tools needed:

Cable cutting tool, Insulation stripping tool, Wire brush, Probe wrench, Hotstick, Suitable sensing device (for 168RLR voltage test)

Supplies needed:

Replacement Elbow Connector Housing, Compression Lug, Probe, Lubricant (Do Not Substitute), Hose Clamp, Copper wire (No. 14 AWG / 2.5mm or equivalent), Appropriate connector (for neutral wires)

  1. Perform Pre-Installation Checks and De-energize Apparatus

DANGER: All apparatus must be de-energized during installation or removal of parts. Check the contents of the package to ensure they are complete and undamaged. Verify all components fit properly with the cable and/or mating products. Check probe threads by threading the probe into the compression lug; if resistance is encountered, check for damage and replace. Read all instructions before starting and have all required tools at hand, maintaining cleanliness throughout the procedure.

  2. Remove Existing Livefront Termination

Remove the rubber cap from the existing terminator. Cut off the connector at the top of the terminator. Disconnect the ground lead from the base of the terminator. Finally, remove the terminator housing from the cable.

  3. Prepare the Cable

Train the cable to be straight and in-line with the bushing centerline. Cut the cable to measure 10-1/2 inches from the bushing centerline. Check the insulation shield distance: if it measures less than 6-1/2 inches, proceed. If it is greater than 6-1/2 inches, consult your nearest ELASTIMOLD representative. Remove 1-3/8 inches of cable insulation from the end of the cable, cutting squarely. DO NOT NICK THE CONDUCTOR.

  4. Install the Compression Lug

Wire brush the bare aluminum conductor and immediately install the compression lug. Rotate the lug to spread the inhibitor. Position the compression lug so the contact threaded hole aligns with the bushing bore. Refer to the crimp chart packaged with the compression lug for recommended crimp information. Start crimping at the crimp line mark, rotating 180 degrees for each successive crimp. Carefully wipe any excessive inhibitor from the outside of the lug and cable.

  5. Assemble the Elbow Connector

Lubricate the cable insulation and the inside of the elbow housing with the supplied lubricant. DO NOT SUBSTITUTE, as other lubricants may be harmful. Keep the insulation clean of dirt and grime, and do not use excess grease or introduce any grease into the gap between the lug and the insulation. Slide the elbow connector onto the cable with a back and forth twisting motion. Wipe off all excess grease. Align the elbow with the compression lug’s threaded hole. Thread the probe into the lug by hand, taking care not to cross-thread. The probe must turn freely for approximately four turns before becoming snug. Tighten the probe with the wrench until the wrench bends.

  6. Connect the Concentric Neutral

Using a separate copper wire (No. 14 AWG / 2.5mm) or equivalent, insert one end through the grounding eye on the elbow and twist it tight, taking care not to damage the eye. Twist all neutral wires together and connect them to ground using an appropriate connector. Provide adequate slack in the wires for elbow operation. Add the supplied hose clamp as shown in the documentation and tighten it snugly, but do not overtighten.

  7. Connect the Elbow to the Bushing Plug

Lubricate the receptacle portion of the elbow connector and the mating bushing with the supplied lubricant. LUBRICATE ONLY IF THE TRANSFORMER AND ELBOW ARE KNOWN TO BE DE-ENERGIZED. Securely fasten a hotstick to the loadbreak connector pulling eye. Place the elbow connector receptacle area over the bushing plug, inserting the elbow male contact (arc follower portion) into the bushing until the first slight resistance is felt (contacts are approximately 2 inches apart). DO NOT HOLD IN THIS POSITION, but immediately push the elbow home with a fast, firm, straight motion to engage the internal lock on the elbow and bushing interface. Apply sufficient force to engage the internal lock.

  8. Perform Voltage Test (168RLR ONLY)

If installing a 168RLR model, you can perform a voltage test. Remove the test point cap with a hotstick, peeling it off at an angle rather than pulling directly in line with the assembly. WARNING: The voltage test point is a capacitance device and is not directly connected to the conductor. Do not use conventional voltage measuring equipment. Follow the manufacturer’s directions for the meter used. Test with a suitable sensing device made for use with separable connectors manufactured with capacitive test points to determine if the cable is energized. Contamination, moisture, dirt, or using the wrong equipment can provide a false 'no voltage' indication. To prevent serious or fatal injury, treat the elbow as energized until the 'no voltage' test point indication is confirmed by other means. After voltage detection, clean and lubricate the inside surface of the cap with silicone grease and replace it on the test point.
