Overview

The ABB 162LR-C2270 is a 200 Amp, 15kV loadbreak elbow connector engineered for medium-voltage power distribution systems. This connector is designed to provide a reliable, load-interruptible connection point for cable insulation diameters ranging from 0.805 inches to 1.060 inches. The 162LR-C2270 features a copper compression lug for secure conductor termination, supporting compressed stranded conductors up to 4/0 AWG and solid conductors up to 250 AWG (126.67 mm²). Key applications include utility substations, industrial power distribution, renewable energy systems, and commercial facilities requiring safe, high-voltage cable connections. The loadbreak design allows for hot-swapping of cables under load, minimizing downtime during maintenance or reconfiguration. The connector is part of ABB's Installation Products line, known for durable, field-proven components in medium-voltage systems. The 162LR-C2270 is optimized for compatibility with 15kV class systems, ensuring electrical integrity and operational safety. Its robust construction supports long-term reliability in harsh environments, including outdoor installations subject to moisture, dust, and mechanical stress. The connector's design aligns with industry standards for medium-voltage cable accessories, providing a standardized interface for utility and industrial applications. For precise installation, the connector requires matching cable insulation diameters and conductor sizes. The catalog number selection process involves determining the insulation diameter code (C for 0.805-1.060"), material code (5 for copper), and compression lug code (270 for 4/0 AWG compressed stranded or 250 solid).

How to Install 161LR/162LR Loadbreak Elbow Connectors

This guide provides step-by-step instructions for preparing cables, assembling the elbow connector, grounding, and connecting the 161LR or 162LR Loadbreak Elbow Connector to a 15kV class bushing.

Estimated time: 1h 30m

Tools needed:

Probe Wrench, Cable cutting tool, Wire strippers, Cable knife, Measuring tape, Wire brush, Crimp tool, Insulated hotstick

Supplies needed:

161LR or 162LR Elbow Connector Housing, Compression Lug, Probe, Lubricant (supplied with kit), No. 14 AWG (2.5mm) copper wire, Appropriate connector (for neutral to ground), Vinyl tape (if applicable), Conductive copper tape (if applicable), Cold shrink tube/sealing kit (if applicable)

  1. Perform Initial Checks and Ensure Safety

DANGER: All apparatus must be de-energized during installation or removal of parts. This product should be installed only by competent personnel trained in good safety practices involving high voltage electrical equipment. Before starting, confirm all apparatus are de-energized. Inspect the contents of the package to ensure all components (Elbow Connector Housing, Compression Lug, Probe, Probe Wrench, Lubricant) are complete and undamaged. Check all components for proper fit with the cable and mating products. Thread the probe into the compression lug by hand to check for resistance; if encountered, replace damaged components. Ensure all required tools are at hand and maintain cleanliness throughout the procedure.

  2. Prepare the Cable for Termination

Train the cable to ensure adequate slack for future operation. Depending on your cable type (non-jacketed/jacketed concentric neutral, jacketed with drain wires, or jacketed copper tape shield), prepare the neutral or ground wires and cut the cable squarely at the centerline of the bushing. Refer to the specific instructions for your cable type to remove the outer jacket and prepare the neutral/ground wires (e.g., remove 9-5/8” (240mm) of outer jacket, unwrap and bind neutral/ground wires, or wrap copper tape).

  3. Prepare the Cable Conductor and Install Compression Lug

Remove the insulation shield and insulation 2-1/8” (55mm) from the cable end, cutting squarely without nicking the conductor. Wire brush the bare aluminum conductors thoroughly and immediately install the compression lug. Rotate the lug to spread any inhibitor. Position the compression lug so its contact threaded hole aligns with the bushing bore. Crimp the lug according to the manufacturer's chart, starting at the crimp line mark and rotating 180 degrees for each successive crimp. Carefully wipe off any excess inhibitor. Remove the insulation shield as shown in the diagrams, and bevel the insulation end by a maximum of 1/8” (5mm). Thoroughly clean the insulation to remove all traces of dirt or excess inhibitor.

  4. Assemble the Elbow Connector

Lubricate the cable insulation and the inside of the elbow housing with the supplied lubricant. DO NOT SUBSTITUTE other lubricants. Slide the elbow connector onto the cable using a back-and-forth twisting motion, then wipe off all excess lubricant. Align the elbow with the compression lug’s threaded hole. Thread the probe into the lug by hand, ensuring it turns freely for approximately four turns before becoming snug. Tighten the probe with the supplied wrench until the wrench bends, indicating proper torque.

  5. Ground the Elbow Connector

Insert one end of a separate No. 14 AWG (2.5mm) copper wire or equivalent through the grounding eye on the elbow and twist it tightly, taking care not to damage the eye. Twist all neutral wires together and connect them to ground using an appropriate connector, ensuring adequate slack in the wires for elbow operation. If using a cold shrink grounding kit, refer to its specific instructions.

  6. Connect the Elbow to the Bushing Plug

CONFIRM THAT THE TRANSFORMER AND ELBOW ARE DE-ENERGIZED before proceeding. Lubricate the receptacle portion of the elbow connector and the mating bushing with the supplied lubricant. Operate the connection using a full insulated 'hotstick' type tool. DO NOT OPERATE BY HAND. Securely fasten the hotstick to the loadbreak connector pulling eye and insert the elbow connector into the bushing with a fast, firm, straight motion, applying sufficient force to engage the internal lock. WARNING: Always confirm de-energized status before making connections. Use appropriate insulated tools for operation.
