How to Install 261LR-C5230 Loadbreak Elbow Connectors
This guide provides step-by-step instructions for the installation of 261LR-C5230 Loadbreak Elbow Connectors, covering cable preparation, lug installation, elbow assembly, and grounding procedures. Always ensure all apparatus are de-energized before beginning any installation or operation.
Estimated time: 1h 30m
Tools needed:
Wire strippers, Wire brush, Appropriate crimp tool, Probe wrench, Pliers, Full insulated hotstick type live-line tool
Supplies needed:
261LR-C5230 Elbow Connector Housing, Compression Lug, Probe, Lubricant (supplied with kit), No. 14 AWG (2.5mm) Copper Ground Wire, Appropriate Neutral Wire Connector, UD Cable (specific type as per application), Vinyl tape (optional, for drain wires), Conductive copper tape (optional, for copper tape shield cable), Cold shrink tube (optional, if using sealing kits)
- Prepare Cable and Install Compression Lug
Before starting, ensure all apparatus are de-energized. Inspect all components for damage and compatibility. Train the cable to ensure adequate slack. Prepare neutral or drain wires according to your cable type (e.g., pull extra length, bind, remove outer jacket). Cut the cable squarely at the bushing centerline. Remove 2-1/8 inches (55mm) of shield and insulation from the cable end, taking care not to nick the conductor. Wire brush bare aluminum conductors and immediately install the compression lug, rotating to spread inhibitor and aligning its threaded hole with the bushing bore. Crimp the lug according to the crimp chart provided with the lug. Remove 6-7/8 inches (175mm) of the insulation shield and bevel the insulation end by a maximum of 1/8 inch (5mm). Thoroughly clean the insulation.
- Assemble the Elbow Connector
Lubricate the cable insulation and the inside of the elbow housing using only the lubricant supplied; do not substitute. Slide the elbow connector onto the cable with a back-and-forth twisting motion, then wipe off any excess lubricant. Align the elbow with the compression lug's threaded hole. Thread the probe into the lug by hand, ensuring it turns freely for approximately four turns before becoming snug. Tighten the probe with the supplied wrench until the wrench bends.
- Ground and Connect the Elbow
Insert one end of a separate No. 14 AWG (2.5mm) copper wire or equivalent through the grounding eye on the elbow and twist it tightly. Twist all neutral wires together and connect them to ground using an appropriate connector, ensuring adequate slack for elbow operation. CONFIRM THAT THE TRANSFORMER AND ELBOW ARE DE-ENERGIZED before proceeding. Lubricate the receptacle portion of the elbow connector and the mating bushing with the supplied lubricant. Securely fasten a full insulated 'hotstick' type live-line tool to the loadbreak connector pulling eye and connect the elbow to the bushing with a fast, firm, straight motion. Do not operate by hand.
