How to Install Elastimold 161LR/162LR Loadbreak Elbow Connectors
This guide provides step-by-step instructions for the safe and proper installation of Elastimold 161LR and 162LR Loadbreak Elbow Connectors, including cable preparation, elbow assembly, grounding, and connection to a bushing.
Estimated time: 1h
Tools needed:
Probe Wrench, Hotstick (live-line tool), Wire brush, Crimp tool, Wire strippers, Suitable sensing device (for 162LR capacitive test points)
Supplies needed:
161LR or 162LR Loadbreak Elbow Connector Kit (includes Elbow Housing, Compression Lug, Probe, Lubricant), Copper wire (No. 14 AWG / 2.5mm), Appropriate connector (for neutral/ground), HV insulated cap(s) or connector(s) (if replacing shipping covers), Conductive copper tape (if applicable), Cold shrink tube (if applicable), Vinyl tape (if applicable)
- Perform Initial Safety Checks and Component Verification
DANGER: Ensure all apparatus are de-energized during installation or removal of parts, except for test point caps and indicators. Do not touch or move energized products. Inspect all parts for damage, proper rating, and compatibility with mating parts. Check package contents for completeness. Verify proper fit of components with the cable and/or mating products. Test fit the probe into the compression lug by threading it in, ensuring it turns freely for approximately four turns before becoming snug. Remove any protective shipping covers and replace with appropriate HV insulated caps or connectors before submerging or energizing the circuit. Have all required tools at hand and maintain cleanliness throughout the procedure.
- Train Cable and Perform Initial Preparation
Train the cable to ensure adequate slack for ease of operation. Prepare the concentric neutral wires or grounding braid wire according to your specific cable type (non-jacketed, jacketed, drain wires, or copper tape shield), ensuring extra length for connection to the tank ground. Cut the excess cable squarely at the centerline of the bushing. Perform any specific jacket or shield removal and preparation (e.g., removing outer jacket, unwrapping drain wires, removing copper tape shield, applying conductive copper tape or cold shrink tube) as required for your cable type, referring to the detailed diagrams in the full instructions.
- Prepare Conductor and Insulation
Remove 2-1/8” (55mm) of the shield and insulation from the cable end, cutting squarely and taking care not to nick the conductor. Wire brush bare aluminum conductors and immediately install the compression lug. Rotate the lug to spread inhibitor. Position the compression lug so its contact threaded hole aligns with the bushing bore. Crimp the lug according to the crimp chart packaged with the compression lug, starting at the crimp line mark and rotating 180 degrees for each successive crimp. Carefully wipe excess inhibitor from the outside of the lug and cable. Remove 6-7/8” (175mm) of the insulation shield. Bevel the insulation end 1/8” (5mm) maximum. Thoroughly clean the insulation to remove all traces of dirt or excess inhibitor.
- Assemble the Elbow Connector
Lubricate the cable insulation and the inside of the elbow housing with the lubricant supplied in the kit. DO NOT SUBSTITUTE, as other lubricants may be harmful. Keep insulation clean of dirt and grime. Slide the elbow connector onto the cable using a back-and-forth twisting motion. Wipe off all excess lubricant. Align the elbow with the compression lug’s threaded hole. Thread the probe into the lug by hand, taking care not to cross-thread. The probe must turn freely for approximately four turns before becoming snug. Tighten the probe with the supplied wrench until the wrench bends.
- Connect Grounding Wires
Insert one end of a separate copper wire (No. 14 AWG / 2.5mm or equivalent) through the grounding eye on the elbow. Twist it tightly, taking care not to damage the eye. Twist all neutral wires together and connect them to ground using an appropriate connector. Provide adequate slack in the wires for elbow operation. If using a cold shrink grounding kit, refer to its specific instructions to complete the installation.
- Connect Elbow to Bushing (Loadmake Operation)
DANGER: CONFIRM THAT THE TRANSFORMER AND ELBOW ARE DE-ENERGIZED BEFORE PROCEEDING WITH LUBRICATION AND CONNECTION. Lubricate the receptacle portion of the elbow connector and the mating bushing with the lubricant supplied. Prepare the bushing for the elbow connector by removing its insulated cap using a hotstick tool. Securely fasten the hotstick to the loadbreak connector pulling eye. Confirm positive control of the elbow connector. Insert the probe tip approximately 2” (50mm) into the bushing. DO NOT HOLD IN THIS POSITION. Immediately push the elbow home with a fast, firm, straight motion, using sufficient force to engage the internal lock on the elbow connector and bushing interface.
- Perform Voltage Test (162LR only, Optional)
For 162LR connectors equipped with an integral capacitance test point, remove the test point cap with a hotstick, peeling it off at an angle rather than pulling directly in line. WARNING: The voltage test point is a capacitance device and is not directly connected to the conductor. Do not use conventional voltage measuring equipment. Follow the manufacturer’s directions for the meter used. Test with a suitable sensing device, made for use with separable connectors manufactured with capacitive test points, to determine if the cable is energized. Treat the elbow as energized until the “no voltage” test point indication is confirmed by other means. After voltage detection, clean the inside surface of the cap, lubricate it with silicone lubricant, and replace it on the test point.
