How to Install 161LR and 162LR Loadbreak Elbow Connectors
This guide provides step-by-step instructions for the safe installation and initial setup of 161LR and 162LR Loadbreak Elbow Connectors, designed for terminating UD cables and connecting to 15kV class loadbreak bushings.
Estimated time: 1h 30m
Tools needed:
Probe Wrench, Wire brush, Crimp tool, Cable cutter, Cable stripping tool, Hotstick tool
Supplies needed:
161LR or 162LR Elbow Connector Housing, Compression Lug, Probe, Lubricant (supplied with kit), No. 14 AWG (2.5mm) copper wire or equivalent, Appropriate neutral wire connector, Conductive copper tape (if required), Vinyl tape (if required), Cold shrink tube (if required), HV insulated caps or connectors (if replacing shipping covers)
- Perform Pre-Installation Checks and Safety Procedures
Before starting, ensure all apparatus is de-energized. This product must be installed by competent personnel trained in high voltage safety practices. Inspect all package contents for completeness and damage. Verify all components fit properly with the cable and mating products. Check the probe threads by hand-threading it into the compression lug; replace if resistance is encountered. If the product has shipping covers, remove them and replace with appropriate HV insulated caps or connectors before energizing.
- Prepare the Cable for Initial Termination
Train the cable to ensure adequate slack for operation. Based on your cable type (non-jacketed concentric neutral, jacketed concentric neutral, jacketed with drain wires, or jacketed copper tape shield), follow the specific instructions in the product manual for initial jacket removal, neutral wire management, and application of any sealing kits. Ensure extra length of neutral or grounding braid wire is available for connection to tank ground.
- Prepare the Conductor and Insulation
Remove 2-1/8 inches (55mm) of the shield and insulation from the cable end, cutting squarely without nicking the conductor. Wire brush bare aluminum conductors thoroughly and immediately install the compression lug. Ensure the lug's threaded hole aligns with the bushing bore. Crimp the lug according to the manufacturer's chart, starting at the crimp line mark and rotating 180 degrees for each successive crimp. Carefully wipe off any excess inhibitor. Remove the insulation shield 6-7/8 inches (175mm) from the cable end, ensuring a straight, smooth, and squared cut. Bevel the insulation end a maximum of 1/8 inch (5mm). Thoroughly clean the insulation to remove all dirt or excess inhibitor.
- Assemble the Elbow Connector
Lubricate the cable insulation and the inside of the elbow housing using only the supplied lubricant; do not substitute. Slide the elbow connector onto the cable with a back-and-forth twisting motion, then wipe off any excess lubricant. Align the elbow with the compression lug's threaded hole. Thread the probe into the lug by hand, ensuring it turns freely for approximately four turns before becoming snug. Tighten the probe with the supplied wrench until the wrench bends, indicating proper torque.
- Connect Grounding and Neutral Wires
Insert one end of a separate No. 14 AWG (2.5mm) copper wire or equivalent through the grounding eye on the elbow and twist tightly, being careful not to damage the eye. If the elbow is pre-ordered with a ground wire, skip this. Twist all concentric neutral wires together and connect them to ground using an appropriate connector, ensuring adequate slack for elbow operation. If using a cold shrink grounding kit, refer to its specific instructions.
- Connect the Elbow to the Bushing
CONFIRM THAT BOTH THE TRANSFORMER AND THE ELBOW ARE DE-ENERGIZED before proceeding. Lubricate the receptacle portion of the elbow connector and the mating bushing with the supplied lubricant. Securely fasten a hotstick to the loadbreak connector pulling eye. Insert the probe tip approximately 2 inches (50mm) into the bushing, then immediately push the elbow home with a fast, firm, straight motion to engage the internal lock. Do not operate by hand.
