How to Install 161LR and 162LR Loadbreak Elbow Connectors
This guide provides detailed instructions for the installation and initial setup of 161LR and 162LR Loadbreak Elbow Connectors, including cable preparation, elbow assembly, and grounding.
Estimated time: 1h 30m
Tools needed:
Probe Wrench, Wire brush, Crimp tool, Hotstick
Supplies needed:
Lubricant (Do Not Substitute), Copper wire (No. 14 AWG / 2.5mm or equivalent), Appropriate connector for neutral wires, Cable sealing kit components (if applicable)
- Perform initial checks and train cable
DANGER: All apparatus must be de-energized during installation. This product should be installed only by competent personnel trained in good safety practices involving high voltage electrical equipment. Inspect the package contents to ensure all parts are complete and undamaged. Verify all components fit properly with the cable and/or mating products. Thread the probe into the compression lug to check for resistance; replace damaged components if resistance is encountered. Train the cable to ensure adequate slack for future operation. Based on cable type, prepare the cable by pulling extra length for neutral wires/grounding braid, removing the outer jacket, and binding/folding back ground wires as specified. If using a cold shrink sealing kit, slide the cold shrink tube onto the cable. Cut the excess cable squarely at the centerline of the bushing.
- Prepare cable for lug installation
Remove the shield and insulation 2-1/8 inches (55mm) from the cable end, ensuring a square cut without nicking the conductor. Wire brush bare aluminum conductors immediately and install the compression lug. Rotate the lug to spread the inhibitor. Align the compression lug's contact threaded hole with the bushing bore. Crimp the lug starting at the crimp line mark, rotating 180 degrees for each successive crimp (refer to crimp chart for tool information). Carefully wipe excess inhibitor from the outside of the lug and cable. Remove the insulation shield as shown in the diagram, and bevel the insulation end a maximum of 1/8 inch (5mm). Thoroughly clean the insulation to remove all traces of dirt or excess inhibitor.
- Assemble the elbow connector
Lubricate the cable insulation and the inside of the elbow housing using ONLY the supplied lubricant. DO NOT SUBSTITUTE, as other lubricants may be harmful to this product or its mating product(s). Keep insulation clean of dirt and grime. Slide the elbow connector onto the cable using a back-and-forth twisting motion. Wipe off all excess lubricant. Align the elbow with the compression lug's threaded hole. Thread the probe into the lug by hand, ensuring it turns freely for approximately four turns before becoming snug. Tighten with the supplied wrench until the wrench bends.
- Connect grounding and neutral wires
Insert one end of a separate copper wire (No. 14 AWG / 2.5mm or equivalent) through the grounding eye on the elbow. Twist tightly, taking care not to damage the eye. If the elbow is preordered with ground wire, continue to the concentric neutral connection section. Twist all neutral wires together and connect them to ground using an appropriate connector. Ensure adequate slack in the wires for elbow operation. If using a cold shrink grounding kit, refer to the instructions supplied with the grounding kit to complete the installation.
- Connect the elbow to the bushing plug
WARNING: CONFIRM THAT THE TRANSFORMER AND ELBOW ARE DE-ENERGIZED before proceeding with this step. Lubricate the receptacle portion of the elbow connector and the mating bushing with the supplied lubricant. Securely fasten a hotstick to the loadbreak connector pulling eye. Insert the probe tip approximately 2 inches (50mm) into the bushing (at this point the contacts are approximately 4 inches apart). Immediately push the elbow home with a fast, firm, straight motion to engage the internal lock on the elbow connector and bushing interface. DO NOT HOLD IN THE PARTIALLY INSERTED POSITION. Do not operate by hand; use a full insulated 'hotstick' type tool.
