How to Install 161LR/162LR Loadbreak Elbow Connectors
This guide provides step-by-step instructions for the safe and proper installation of Elastimold 161LR and 162LR Loadbreak Elbow Connectors, including cable preparation, lug installation, elbow assembly, and grounding.
Estimated time: 1h 30m
Tools needed:
Probe Wrench, Wire brush, Crimp tool, Hotstick, Wire strippers, Vinyl tape
Supplies needed:
161LR or 162LR Elbow Connector Housing, Compression Lug, Probe, Lubricant (Do Not Substitute), UD Cable (appropriate type for termination), HV insulated cap(s) or connector(s), Cold shrink tube (if using sealing kit), Conductive copper tape (if using G2 or G3 kit), No. 14 AWG / 2.5mm copper wire, Appropriate connector for neutral wires
- Perform Initial Inspection and Safety Checks
Inspect all components for damage, proper rating, and compatibility with mating parts. Ensure all apparatus in the work area are de-energized before proceeding with installation. If the product was supplied with protective shipping covers, remove them and replace with appropriate HV insulated cap(s) or connector(s) before submerging or energizing the circuit.
- Prepare the Cable for Termination
Train the cable to ensure adequate slack for ease of operation. Prepare the cable end by removing the outer jacket, shield, and insulation according to the specific cable type (e.g., non-jacketed concentric neutral, jacketed concentric neutral, jacketed with drain wires, or jacketed copper tape shield) and the provided diagrams. Cut the excess cable squarely at the centerline of the bushing. If using a cold shrink sealing kit (e.g., 200ECS, 200ECS-G1, 200ECS-G2, or G3), slide the cold shrink tube onto the cable, loose end first.
- Prepare Conductor and Insulation
Remove the shield and insulation 2-1/8” (55mm) from the cable end, cutting squarely and taking care not to nick the conductor. Wire brush the bare aluminum conductors and immediately install the compression lug, rotating it to spread the inhibitor. Position the compression lug so its contact threaded hole aligns with the bushing bore. Crimp the lug according to the crimp chart, rotating 180 degrees for each successive crimp. Carefully wipe any excess inhibitor from the outside of the lug and cable. Remove the insulation shield as shown in the diagram (6-7/8” (175mm) from the lug end) and bevel the insulation end a maximum of 1/8” (5mm). Thoroughly clean the insulation to remove all traces of dirt or excess inhibitor.
- Assemble the Elbow Connector
Lubricate the cable insulation and the inside of the elbow housing with the supplied lubricant. DO NOT SUBSTITUTE other lubricants, as they may be harmful to the product. Keep the insulation clean and free of dirt. Slide the elbow connector onto the cable using a back-and-forth twisting motion. Wipe off all excess lubricant. Align the elbow with the compression lug’s threaded hole. Thread the probe into the lug by hand, ensuring it turns freely for approximately four turns before becoming snug. Tighten the probe with the supplied wrench until the wrench bends.
- Connect Grounding Wires
Insert one end of a separate copper wire (No. 14 AWG / 2.5mm or equivalent) through the grounding eye on the elbow. Twist it tightly, taking care not to damage the eye. Twist all neutral wires together and connect them to ground using an appropriate connector. Provide adequate slack in the wires for elbow operation. If using a cold shrink grounding kit, refer to the instructions supplied with that kit to complete the installation.
- Connect Elbow to Bushing Plug
CONFIRM THAT THE TRANSFORMER AND ELBOW ARE DE-ENERGIZED before proceeding. Lubricate the receptacle portion of the elbow connector and the mating bushing with the supplied lubricant. Securely fasten a hotstick to the loadbreak connector pulling eye. Insert the probe tip approximately 2” (50mm) into the bushing. Immediately push the elbow home with a fast, firm, straight motion, using sufficient force to engage the internal lock on the elbow connector and bushing interface. DO NOT HOLD THE ELBOW IN THE PARTIALLY INSERTED POSITION.
